Known family history from research by my cousin:
John Long born 1800 Island Magee; died 1844 on Lake Ontario USA
Agness Hill born 1804 Island Magee; died 1844 Wisconsin USA
Married before 1823
Moved to Canada > USA around 1844
Children:
Robert 1823, James 1828, John 1831, William 1833, Thomas 1834, Margaret 1837, Ann 1841, Matilda 1843
My family continues through Robert who married Mary Anna Manning (1820-1903) from County Wexford, the daughter of Michael and Anna Manning who may have been lighthouse keepers.
Who were the parents of John Long and Agness Hill? Might they have come from Scotland?
How and where would they have come to Canada (USA) in 1844? Is there is a place to find a ship log?

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
You could try looking in church records for John and Agness? birth records. This would give you their parents? names.
Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which may be helpful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what copies of records are available. For Island Magee/Larne records follow this link:
You can see that copies do are only available from c. 1821. It may be an idea to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance and to see if the original records start earlier.
For Church of Ireland records check: http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
These records generally date to go back further.
You can also look for church records online:
www.familysearch.org (free)
www.rootsireland.ie (not free)
They would have travelled to Canada on a ship; this ship could have left from either Ireland or the UK. Also it is possible that they entered Canada through the US. For information on emigration to Canada follow this link:

For the US check http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/US-immigration-records.html
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/antrim/index.html
I hope this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
