I am searching for information on my ancestore who could be from Derrynoose. They are Terence Hughes who married Catherine O Neill back at the turn of the 1800's . They had a daughter Phoebe who immigrated to the USA and lived on a farm in Maine. She married a Doran ( Patrick ) who was from Co Armagh....Other names who could be related to the Hughes are Owen, Henry ( whose wife was Jane) , Patrick and Peter Hughes.. If anyone has any history to share can you please contact me? Thank you...

  • Unfortunately Derrynoose RC records don?t start till 1835. Tracing this family will therefore be rather tricky, if that is where they originated.

  • Thank you....Do you think Derrynoose will have cemetery/ death records?

  • There are no statutory death records in Ireland before 1864. In general, RC churches didn?t keep burial records. However Derrynoose does have death records from 1846 to 1851 only. There are copies of those records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. The records are also on-line on the Rootsireland site (subscription).  http://www.rootsireland.ie

It?s also worth bearing in mind that people weren?t always buried in the graveyards attached to the church they attended. Where they had family plots, or had moved, they were sometimes buried elsewhere. However gravestones might be your next best option: This site has 38 Hughes gravestones in Derrynoose:

  • Hi there, through dna I've narrowed down my Hughes line. I'm connected to Owen Hughes of derrynoose. His daughter Margaret married Moore (John?). Possibly his parents were John and Judith Woods. Now message from 2015 mentions Henry and Jane. Could this be Jane Kearney. Henry was born 1773 and other dna matches have him and Jane as my direct ancestors. My ancestor was Arthur, born c1803 married to Mary Ann Tierney. He had brother John I'm sure.
Please get in touch if anyone is also descended from this family.
Hopefully poster from 2015 hasn't given up the search. It's taken me 13 years to get to derrynoose!!!
