Dickson family

Lisnadill consists of 324 acres of mainly agricultural land. In the 1901 census there were 16 houses there with a total of 80 inhabitants. (None named Dickson).

In Griffiths Valuation for 1864 there were about 24 houses listed, again with no Dicksons.

The modern B31 Newtownhamilton road runs through the middle of Lisnadill. However Irish townlands rarely have any boundaries marked and if in doubt you may need to enquire locally to be sure you have found it. There is a junction with Ballymoran Rd, near the church, and that is in the townland. That’s on the road from Armagh to Newtownhamilton.

You don’t say what denomination the family were but I suspect Church of Ireland. If so, as you already know, Lisnadill’s records were lost in 1922 and they have nothing before 1877. Likewise the censuses from 1821 – 1851 that should have listed the family are also lost.

I don’t see any Dicksons in the tithe applotment records for Lisnadill parish (which includes the townland of the same name) in 1832. That suggests either the family weren’t there or that they had no land. So were labourers and weavers. They are notoriously difficult to trace as they often moved about a bit and mostly led a life that rarely created official records.

You could try the local graveyard(s) for Dickson gravestones but most weavers and labourers couldn’t afford a gravestone so I am not optimistic you’ll you’re your immediate family.
