I am researching my Irish family connections and have come up against a seemingly inpenatrible brick wall. From what I have been able to discover so far, these are the details:

Elizabeth Gordon: Born:       C1878 Loughgilly ARMAGH

Married:   28 June 1900 Kalgoorlie WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Died:       08 September 1960 Bunbury WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Susan Gordon     Born        C 1881 Loughgilly ARMAGH

Married:   17 January 1902 Perth WESTERN AUSTRALIA

                          Died:        ?

I believe there was a brother born possibly two years later in 1883.

MOTHER: Mary (Margaret) nee Fisher. FATHER: William Gordon

I believe the mother, two daughters and the son (father deceased by this time) emigrated to South Australia in C1886, stayed approximately one year then travelled to Western Australia and settled in the goldfields in 1887.

I am seeking any information regarding Birth/Baptism records (Death records too for William Gordon) shipping records/details for the voyage to Australia census records if they exist.

Any information would be greatfully appreciated

Regards and best wishes

Kenneth

  • Kenneth,

I found the following 4 children born to parents named Gordon and Fisher. All births registered in Newry, Co Down (whose registration area includes part of Co Armagh).

    Margaret 16.6.1873

    Elizabeth 26.1.1875

    William 4.6.1877

    Susannah 8.6.1879

You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

I looked for a death for William Gordon (senior) but couldn’t see one in the Newry area. There was a death registered for William 28.4.1886 aged 9 in Newry. That could match the birth in 1877. Might be worth looking at.

Couldn’t see the parents marriage in the stat records.

If you look at the birth certificates and get the townlands (addresses) and father’s occupation, I’ll see if I can locate where they were living for you.

There are no census records in Ireland prior to 1901 (save for a few fragments) so you won’t be able to see the family in that source.

Couldn't see any relevant passenger records on Ancestry or findmypast.
