I know my great grandparents were James Stevenson and Elizabeth Cowan and that at least Elizabeth came from Co Armagh.  I have found reference to Clonmakate and can't isolate whether that is a name of a town or an area.  Are there any descensdents living in Co Armagh now?  Thank you for any help.  We get to visit this coming fall and I'm working hard on tracing where family may have been.

  • Clonmakate is a townland in Tartaraghan parish.

I could not locate the 1901 census records for Clonmakate. In the 1911 census, there was one Stevenson family.

In Derrycaw townland in the same parish, there was a 72 year old James Stevenson and his 70 year olf wife Eliza Ann. Not sure if they are connected to your James and Elizabeth.

  • Thank you Roger McDonnell for such a speedy response!  I saw the 1911 census and saw Stevenson in the list.  My James and Elizabeth came to Canada in 1859 (I think).  They settled in Essex, Ontario and we just found their headstone in the cemetery there a couple of days ago.  With your help to pinpoint the area they came from, I'm hoping I can back track to their family before they left Ireland.    Colleen Wolfer
