I would like to find out more information on ROBERT BROWN, Born 25/8/1833 Parish of Tartaraynan, Armagh, Ireland.  Died 26/01/1900 at Condamine, Queensland, Australia.  He married MARY JANE HAUGHEY on 12/10/1854 Tullylish, Down, Ireland.  Marriage FHL File No. 101353 Reference ID: 2:3BX3TR5.  Mary Jane Haughey was born on 18/3/1832 Down County, Northern Ireland and died on 21/2/1915 in Queensland, Australia.  They arrived in Australia in 1855.

I seem to have alot of information, but their parents only have a small amount.  Robert Brown's parents are John Brown, born in Ireland, and Martha?  Mary Haughey's parents are listed as James Haughey, Down, Ireland and Jane Brown.

I would love to track down some information as I believe my ancestors had some connection with the Spanish Armada in 1588 and this was the line of my family tree.  The only information I have gathered has been from www.ancestry.com.au.

Thank you for your help.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

One reason why you may only have found a small amount about the parents of Robert and Mary is the early date of your search. As you probably know, civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 (generally speaking) and before this time we are dependent on parish records. These begin at different times depending on the parish in question.

Tartaraghan is a civil parish in Co. Armagh. Records for the corresponding RC parish of Loughgall begin in 1835 for baptisms and 1833 for marriages. Church of Ireland records start much later in 1853 for baptisms and 1845 for marriages. So, any baptism or marriage event in that parish before those dates will not be recorded.

You may find that you will have to undergo an information gathering exercise in the hope that new records will become available that will provide a definitive link.  There is for example, a few John Brown entries listed in the Flax Growers List of 1786. While there is no way of knowing for sure, which if any is Robert?s father it would be a good idea to keep a list of these names:

The site below also has a very good blog that informs people of new and upcoming record releases:
