I have been advised my great-grandparents, Owen John Hearty and Rose Ellen Curtis(maiden name) were married in either 1857 0r 1858 in Agven, Tartaraghan, Armagh, Ireland.  Shortly thereafter thet migrated to New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland and then to Unoited States in 1867.

I have ben unsuccessfuk in confirming their births and marriages.  I have verified births of their 5 children  in Scotland and Nautalization of ownr in 1872 in Summit County, Ohio in 1872.  There are no records of their immigrating to the United States.

Can you be of any assistance?

  • John,

I assume they were RC. RC marriages were not include din the statutory registers in Ireland till 1864. Prior to that you need to rely on church records.

If Owen and Rose had any children born in Scotland from 1861 onwards, the date and place of the parent?s marriage should be recorded on the birth certificates. You can view certificates on the Scotlandspeople site. It costs about ?1.40 a time to view one.  http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Tartaraghan RC marriage records don?t appear to be on-line anywhere. However they are supposedly going on-line later this year as part of an exercise by the National Library in Dublin to put all their RC records on-line. In the meantime there are copies on microfilm in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast and also in the National Library.

I had a look for a townland called Agven in Co Armagh but could not locate one.

I had a look in Griffiths Valuation for Hearty and Curtis households in Tartaraghan in the late 1850s but none were listed. (Just 8 people named Curtis in Co Armagh in the 1901 census).

  •  I e-mailed Archdioces of Armagh, Parish Office and received no response.  My research indicates there were/are 4 catholic churches in/around Tartaraghan:  Chuch of the Immaculate Conception, Church of St. Malachy, Church of Colmcille and Cathedral Church of St. Patrick.  Are you familiar with any of these and or have contacts?

  • No sorry I don't have any contacts at those churches. However many are inundated with genealogicla requests and don't have the resources to respond, so sadly it;s not unusual to hear that you have not had nay joy there. However the parish records are now on-line free on the National Library site:
