I'm researching the Jackson family in Derrylard in 1860's and earlier. I'm collecting family names that live there in 1851 & 1841. My William Jackson who married Emily Hunt from Derryadd in 1843 was from Derrylard and moved about 1850 out of the county. I have learned of marriages with children of  George Jackson & Ann Jane Love, Thomas Jackson & Lucinda Matchett, Robert Jackson & Jane, Later Robert married Fanny Sulivan after Jane's death, and there was a second Robert Jackson who was a weaver who married a Jane Greenaway. Each family I have additional information of but have not figured out who the father was of William Jackson born abt 1823 living in Derrylard at the time of his marriage to Emily Hunt in 1843. I would love to share information on any famiy from this townland Derrylard. Marcia Earl

  • These Jacksons were Church of Ireland and married in the Milltown Parish Church. I got their marriage record on microfilm copy. No father was named on this marriage record, but I got the wife Emily's birth record saying she was born in Derryadd. Her father was John Hunt, and her mother Rebecca Greenaway. She had a brother and maybe a uncle by the name of Adam Hunt. The Hunts I have information on but the Jacksons from Derrylard are proving difficult. The only information on William being from Derrylard in from his marriage record. His age I have from a death date on a tombstone (1823-1872) in Canada. Only a year was written on the tombstone but the census information varifies that his birth date is close to 1823.

  • Hi Marcia

My relatives also came from Derrylard. One transported to Australia in 1840.

His whole immediate family came to Australia in mid 1850.

father was James Morgan and Mother Margaret Henderson.

I have pretty well placed the land where they lived and it sounds as if the Henderson Family were locals.

I am not sure if this family line is of interest to you but Derrylard looks like it was a quite small from what I can tell.

    Hi Rani Kay,

I found a John Henderson on a tithe for 1834 for Derrylard and a James Henderson on the Valuation of Tenements for the parish of Tartaragan in 1848-64 in Derrylard. These are Margaret's people I'm guessing. James was probably her father brother?

There was a James Morgan in Derrylard in 1823-24. Did Jame Morgan and his wife Margaret stay in Derrylard? Thanks Marcia

  • Hi Marcia

James and Margaret came to Australia in the mid 1850's with their 5 other 'children'. They were all adults.

I suspect there were a few Henderson family members in the region. The tithe records as below.

John Henderson 4 acres 32 perches

James Morgan 2 acres 1 rood and 14 perches one road real acreable value of 17 shillings

Amount of composition for tithe 2 shilling 5 pence

James was a weaver and flax seed farmer.

The Morgan's seemed to lose the connection with Tararghan after they moved to Australia but they established themselves in farming in the Geelong district.

I have a few other names from the region from trial notes (sadly).

Had you come across the Hendersons or Morgan's before?

    Regards Rani

  • Where you ever able to find any information on William Jackson? This is one of my ancestors and I've not been able to find anything on him before his marriage. His daughter Rebecca married by great great great grandfather Robert Elliott who was born in Armagh Co in 1849. I've been able to find nothing on either of them.
