Hi Marion, and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out.  I am new on here but will attempt to help out as much as I can.  The name Dobbin is most uncommon in the Irish Republic but very common in Northern Ireland especially in the counties Antrim, Down and Armagh.  I did however, find one family in Leighlinbridge which is 'next door' to the parish of Tinryland who had similar first names.  There was also a family named Dobbin who lived in Graiguecullen in Carlow.  They emigrated to England and the last one died without leaving a will.  A notice in the Nationalist Newspaper prompted my mother to contact a relative by the name of Townsend and she inherited a sum of money.  I am not sure how they were related. This may be of interest to you and I will leave any other information to the more experienced researchers.   Anna

Thank you Roger & Anna. I find the name Tinryland most unusual. I am surprised the name DOBBIN is uncommon there. My family spelt it DOBIN but they tended to abreviate everything.  Patrick CARROLL was supposed to be an innkeeper. The WALSH children's baptismal records give Powerstown as their reisdence.  The information re England & Graiguecullen could be helpful. Thank you both again.

PS When did you find the family with the similar names & what decade do you estimate the TOWNSEND/DOBBIN familieswere in Ireland or England please?

sorry Marion, forgot to give dates.  In the 1901 census there are two families.......one in Carlow town and one in Leighlinbridge you can find similar names in the Leighlinbridge family of 9.  I am not 100% sure but it was the 70s when my mother read the notice and contacted Kathy Townsend.  If I see Kathy's daughter I will ask her if she knows of the connection between her mother and the Dobbins family.  I know at some stage there was a Dobbin family living in the Graiguecullen area too.  Hope this helps..................Anna

Yes, thank you Anna, that is a great help. I looked at England but was thinking much too early & floundered hopelessley! I would appreciate greatly if your friend can help.  With only 2 families surely one or both are connected. Brick walls are slightly chipped!
