Marriage Record.jpg (114.58 KB)

Good day,

My name is Beatrice Conner.  My father was Caffery Conner Jr. and we are direct descendants of Michael Conner who based on his marriage certificate here in the U.S. was born in 1763 In Tinyrland, County Carlow.  His father Guillaume (William Conner) and his mother Rosa Brynes were born in the same town as he states in the marriage certificate.  I have been trying to find information about his beginnings but have not been successful.

I was wondering if anyone could find any information about him or his parents or point me into a direction that might help me in my research as I am also planning on coming to Ireland in mid September 2023 and staying for three weeks especially to do some research in Carlow.

Thanks for any assistance.  It is really appreciated.

Bea Conner

  • Hi,

One question....the marriage record says he was from Castletown, but your message says Tinryland.

    Please clarify?

When I did the research into Caxtouden I found something referring to Tinyrland as I could not find Caxtouden anywhere when I tried to find it on the map of Ireland.

So that is probably why I had Tinyrland.  Here is the original document but it is in Spanish and the one I posted before was the translation.

    Hope this clarifies things.

If you can find out where exactly Caxtouden was, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • I will post this on Castletown to see if maybe that is where is really from.  I am unsure as information comes from all sources, but does not mean it is right.

Thank you for pointing this out.

  • I believe the marriage record says "contado Carlow en irlanda." Not Caxtouden, but county of Carlow in Ireland.

SO Patricia, it was translated by one of my distant cousin's and they had Caxtouden in the translation.  When I look at the French version it says Caxtouden also.  Can you elaborate where Caxtouden is.  I did not see Carlow in the letter.  Marriage Record file is the translation.  Conner_Primo vows is the French version there is a word there says "Caxtouden".

Is that a mistake? I am just trying to get clarification.

Thank you again for all your help on this.

  • Bea,

The person writing the document in Spanish wrote something like "x" for the letter "r."  You can see this usage throughout the document.

I do not think the word is Caxtouden.  The "x" is actually an "r," and the "en" is a separate word. The "l" looks to have been crossed in error, making it look like a "t."

The actual phrase in the document is "contado de Carlow en irlanda." The county of Carlow in Ireland.  There are 32 counties in Ireland as I'm sure you know. None of them is Caxtouden.

I hope this helps solve the puzzle.

  • Oh, yes!  Thank you so much.  That really helps.  So is there a Castletown that is in the county of Carlow?  I am planning on coming to Ireland in September and staying for three weeks to do some research.  I wanted to make a plan to go to the areas where I find has the greatest possibility of finding my ancestor Michael Conner.  Thank you so  much for your kindness and understanding in how important this is to me finding where he came from.

  • Hi Bea,

    Thanks for your kind words.

There is a Castletown townland in Carlow:

    https://www.townlands.ie/carlow/carlow/tullowmagimma/kellistown/castlet…

    Also, google "Castletown Castle."

When you are in Carlow, there is a lovely restaurant in Clonegal: Sha-Roe Bistro.

    Have a great trip.

  • Thank you again. You have put me much closer to finding Michael Conner. And thank you for all your advice and suggestions. Please send me anymore places either for genealogical or fun culture that you would recommend.

Where would you suggest I should start to look for records of either Michael his father William or his mother Rosa Brynes?

Thank you again for your help.

  • Try looking for the Conners of Castletown in the Tithe Applotments and in Griffith's Valuation.
