I am searching for historical and genealogical information pertaining to the ADAMS family of County Cavan and the descendants of this family.  The history of this ADAMS family in northern Ireland dates from the 17th century.  Certain ADAMS family groups were closely associated with Knockbride Church near Bailieborough and a number of ADAMS family members were buried in the Knockbride Churchyard. For additional information, readers are referred to, "A Genealogical history of the family of Adams of Cavan, etc" by the late Rev. Benjamin William Adams, D.D. (see link below).

  • Dear A,

I am unable to add to the research that you have.  However there are memorial tablets in the Church of Ireland, Shercock.  The house at Northlands is no longer there, it would have been in the townland of Taghart North or Closnabradden.  Upon perusal of the 1911 Census, there are 58 people with the surname of Adams, the majority of them close to Shercock/Bailieborough & Knockbride.  Perhaps you could put a letter in the Anglo Celt email linda@anglo.ie  hopefully you will get a wider readership, make sure you put in a phone number as some people may find it easier to communicate.  You could also read the local papers at Irishnewspaperarchives.ie it would give you a sense of their lives as major family events would be recorded, the Irish Times Archive would have recorded their events also.  Also contact the Cavan Library, the genealogical section and the archives may contain more information.  If you need to visit please let me know & I can show you around Shercock & Knockbride.  The Registry of Deeds would have information as they were major land holders.  There are some wills at the National Archives in Dublin and check with PRONI also.

  • I am new to this site. I am looking for information about Killaliss House. My grandfather owned it and my mother grew up there. I’ve read the history by Benjamin Adams but can’t ascertain a direct link to my grandfathers lineage. My grandmother is buried in Knockbride Church yard but not the Adams vault? I can’t find any old photos of Killaliss House. I know it was knocked down and a bungalow built on the site. Anyone out there who may have info?

  • Hi Adams,

What was the name of your grandparents and what are their dates?

When did your family leave Killaliss House?  Do you know who bought the property?

    Regards Carmel
