  • Dear Les,

I looked up the National archives in 1901 & there are a few Corbett families, however none are in Knockbride.

I looked up "Knockbride A History", and there are gravestones listed there, but no Corbetts listed.

As civil registration started in 1864, you predate that but there may be some baptismal/marriage records available.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

If his parents died after 1864, there would be a civil record of it, however without knowing the when and the where it may be difficult to find these.  Using an average of his parents being approx 30 years old when he was born, they would be well advanced at this stage, but they may have been much younger or you may trace siblings.  These civil records are available from the GRO, here is their website:

http://www.groireland.ie/    However Corbett is not a very common surname in Co Cavan and first names were often repeated in families

I searched the Calendars of Wills and there are 3 Corbetts in Co Cavan copies can be obtained from the National Archives http://www.willcalendars.nationalarchives.ie

The closest mention of Corbett is in a book called "Gentleman & Scholar" about Thomas J Barron 1903 - 1992, it is written by Jonathan A Smyth and in it states that his great grand father John married an Elizabeth Corbett, their 2nd son William was born in 1841, they lived in Cornaveagh, Knockbride, Elizabeth may have been a sister of your William.  Jonathan may be able to help you, he works for the Johnston Central Library in Cavan.

Alternatively, you could contact Cavan Genealogy Centre for some assistance, please note that a fee may apply: cavangenealogy@eircom.net

Best of luck in your search, Carmel

  • Dear Carmel

Thank you so much for your reply and the information you provided. I will pursue the sources you mentioned and hopefully will be able to make some connection to my family in Ireland. I have visited your country several time and will likely return in the next year or two. It would be great to have a visit to Cavan.

    Best regards,

    Les
