Hi, was wondering if someone could tell me how to obtain church records on the following

John MANGAN and Mary GALLIGAN were married 1845 in Knockbride ( This information was on one of their childs birth certificates in Scotland.) According to census records etc they were both from County Cavan and seemed to move to Edinburgh not long after thier marriage.

Thanks in advance for any help

  • Knockbride is the name of a civil and Catholic parish is east Co. Cavan, and transcripts of this parish records seem to be included on the RootsIreland pay-website. There is a John Mangan marriage showing up for 1845 in Knockbride parish but this seems to be cross-matching to a Margaret Gallaher.. unfortunately they dont provide images of the register to double check. It's possible the writing in the register is faded or unclear ...

There is another John Mangan marriage is showing up in Co. Cavan in 1841 to a Mary, but her surname is matching Cahill. Note that the details included in RC registers from this time can be quite basic, and I'd expect that the register would generally include date of marriage, names of the bride and groom, plus the names of two witnesses. There may be a place of residence given for the bride or groom. .

  • Hi Susan, I put in your details into ancestry, I am guessing you have an account with them, anyway, what did come up surprised me as I never looked at them before & it was a marriage in Gretna Green, did John marry a 2nd time to Mary Galligan.  I looked up the 1901 census at nationalarchives.ie and there was only one occurence of a Mangan in Co Cavan & that is a Mary Mangan, aged 54, not married, living on her own in Knocknalosset, Corroneary, this would be in the parish of Knockbride & it states, she her religion is Church of Ireland.  Later on I will look up the headstones in Knockbride church and see what is there.   Regards Carmel

  • Hi Susan,

The following may be of interest as Owen Peter Mangan was born in Knockbride Parish.

Click on the following link or copy and paste to your browser:

Some years ago I met Mr Gerry Fitzgerald, of New York, he was compiling a book on the life of Owen Peter Mangan. I may be able to get his contact details, or perhaps you already know Gerry?

    Best wishes,

  • Thankyou everyone for all the replies. Carmel, I dont think he married twice, well not that I know of. Here is a bit more about them

John MANGAN brn abt 1822 County Cavan ( from cenus 1851 onwards in Edinburgh and his death cert in 1855, Edinburgh, Says on death that he had been in area for about 10 years, so assuming that they came over to Scotland just after marriage) On his death it states his parents were James MANGAN and Susan MARKIES ...there is a chance the names may not be correct if person reporting the death was not sure.

Mary GALLIGAN/GALLIGHAN brn abt 1824 County Cavan ( again from census 1851 onwards in Edinburgh and her death in 1872 Edinburgh) Her mother came over with them and lived with them so will put her details below. Her father is down as Thomas GALLIGAN ( he died bef 1851 so not sure if he died in Ireland or Scotland) which I think is correct as this matches with her mothers death cert.

Mary GALLIGAN ms McMANUS ( Mary aboves mother) was brn abt 1793 Ireland ( from census 1851 onwards till her death in 1865 in Edinburgh) Her parents on her death were down as Thomas McMANUS and Ann GREENAN. But again the accuracy of this information will depend on the informant on death knowing.

Mary also had a brother living with her in 1861 and he was James GALLIGAN brn abt 1826 Ireland.

Got Mary and Johns marriage details off one of their childrens births.,In Scotland they put place and year of marriage of parents.

Thanks again everyone for all the info, will follow up all the leads you have posted and no, Les, I am not in contact with Gerry.

  • Hello Les,

I'm in the process of researching my great-great grandfather, Owen Peter and was hoping to speak to Gerry Fitzgerald . I have not been able to find his contact info or the book (if he finished it).

I've read the memoirs published in the Heart of Breifne

I'm traveling to Ireland for the first time next year and hope to spend some time in Cavan. Any info you still have would be appreciated.

    Thank you
