Searching for ancestors/descendants of Robert Ney (Neay) b. 1776, married Margaret ? b. 1780, married 1799, both from County Cavan, parents of Robert "John" Ney 1805-1849 who married Jane Wilson ( b. 1809 Drung) in 1837 in Knockbridge.
John and Jane emmigrated to Canada in May 1849 with 5 children. John carried a letter of recommendation from the parish rector GuyL'Estrange from Knockbridge Church of Ireland.
(the 'a' in Neay was subsequently dropped, and name became Ney when in Canada)
Thank you.

The earliest surviving records for Knockbride Church of Ireland are as follows. (There?s a copy in PRONI, Belfast):
C.I. Knockbride (Kilmore diocese)?Baptisms, 1825-1917; marriages, 1827-1930; burials, 1817-63, 1866-1910 and 1918-71.
So you are not going to find Robert parents baptisms or marriage, nor Robert?s own birth from that source.
Drung?s records go back earlier, so you may find Jane Wilson more easily (Again there?s a copy in PRONI):
C.I. Drung (Kilmore diocese)?Baptisms, 1759-1936; marriages, 1785-1957; burials, 1774-1925, together with details of the total number of families in each parish in 1810 and a list of children and their parents, 1814.
Drung Church of Ireland baptisms 1798 ? 1833 are on-line on the rootisireland site, but no marriages are listed. And the Knockbride records are not on-line anywhere as far as I can tell.
You can write to the Rector/Vicar of both churches for assistance but the Church of Ireland charges for searching the records. (?20 an hour, I believe), and not all Rectors have the time to undertake genealogical research. Otherwise you might need to get someone to look the records up in PRONI.
I looked in the tithe applotment records (1827) and in Griffiths Valuation (1857) for Ney/Neay but there are no families listed in either for Knockbride. Presumably therefore your ancestors did not have any significant amount of land. Drung?s tithe records appear to have been lost. Griffiths for Drung has two Wilson households, one in Drumachon and the other in Drumanna townland.
The civil indexes have several Ney deaths registered in Cootehill. They might refer to your family as Cootehill registration districts area includes Knockbride.
9 Neys (3 households) listed in the 1901 census for Cavan. No Neays. All of the Neys lived in Knockbride parish. Only 1 was Church of Ireland. The other 2 were Presbyterian.

Hi Nansee,
The only information I have about the Ney family is that a Mary Jane Ney, from Cornaveath married a James Barron (b 1839. I know this because a book was written about their grandson Thomas J Barron, by Jonathan A Smyth, this book can be purchased at the following link. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0953499375/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_myi?m=ACVQEJ…
Perhaps you have this information already.
In Coroneary Presbyterian Church on one of the headstones is 'In loving memory of Wilson Ney died 27th Jan 1946 also his wife Sarah died 9 July 1972 their son John James died 14 June 1990.
I dont know if there are any living family, but if you wish me to enquire on your behalf, please ask.
You could also try contacting the Cavan Co Library for further assistance.

Thank you Carmel, this gives me a couple of new places to research.
It would be wonderful if you could find any living relatives. I have been unable to connect via Ancestry.uk to the public family trees for the Neys (don't know if there some kind of glitch), but can see that there are several trees that I am unfamiliar with.
Can you also explain what PRONI is (it was mentioned in previous response to my post) but have no idea what or how to connect with PRONI.
Many thanks.

Nancy,
PRONI is the Public Record Office in Belfast:
http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/about_proni.htm
They hold a range of public records including copies of most surviving chruch records for the counties of Ulster. They are free to view, but they are not on-line and so a personal visit is required to access them.

Nansee,
I have similar information to what you started with.
Did you find anything more after trying the above?Neays are on my Grandmother's side. I live in Canada but I am looking for information on my family history (Tippin, Neay, Hopkins, Elliot, etc.).

Steven, to be honest my previous posts were so long ago, I can't remember if I acted upon the posts. I can tell you that my Ney's also have Hopkins. Annie Levina Hopkins 1884-1963 was married to my 1st cousin 2x removed - William George (Will) Ney. So somewhere in the tree we must be connected.
I also live in Canada - Ottawa. My Neys came from Midland area.
My email is nansee@rogers.com

Hi, there are Neys in the Irish Census 1901 at - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19… - ie this is Co Cavan - DED Skeagh - Townland Beglieve. I don't know if it's any help except that it's an unusual surname.

Ann, thank you so much, I've been a tad neglectful working on my tree lately, but will definitely check out this census.

Hi Ney Gang
Seems this is hotting up and I would like a chunk as I have Neys all over the place. Minnisota, Thunder Bay Midland, other parts of Ontario. I think Steve and I have communicated in the past and I am trying to push through the Knockbride bottleneck. My primary Neys came via Darlington/Oshawa area as John and Jane Wilson. As Jane was widowed shortly after arrival in 1849 I think she had local Ney support before moving on to Simcoe/Tay. I have an Ancestry tree (public) McLachlan Bound 030216 and fellow Neyers are free to help themselves. Though a Canadian I have lived in England for many years. Thinking of popping over to Bailieborough/Knockbride for a look some time this year so please pass on any reasearch ideas. Will be happy to email/Whatsapp or whatever stuff. wes.mclachlan@gmail.com
Feel free to get in touch.

Good Morning Wes,
John Ney and Jane Wilson were my great-great-grandparents.
Generation No. 3
4. JOHN3 NEY was born October 28, 1806 in Drung, Knockbride Parish,
County Cavan, and died January 01, 1850 in Port Darlington, Durham County,
Ontario, Canada. He married JANE (JENNIE) WILSON44,July 13, 1838 in Knockbride,
County Cavan, Ireland, daughter of ? WILSON and ??. She was born 1809 in Bailieborough, County Cavan,
Ireland and died May 29, 1890 in Tay Township, Simcoe County, Ontario,
Canada.
Notes for JOHN NEY:
Letter of Recommendation:
We whose names are undersigned do certify that the Bearer John Neay was born and bred in the parish of
Knockbride in the County of Cavan, Ireland and that he is descended of very respectable parents. That he always
behaved as a Religious and Industrious young Man. He purposes to Emigrate to the lands of America. We do
therefore recommend him to the patronage of all Gentlemen and Religious and well disposed persons, under
whom God, in his gracious providence may cause his lot to be Cast.
Given under our hands this 8th Day of May 1849
John and Jane immigrated to Canada in the late 1840's with their children (Jane was pregnant with Thomas during
the trip). Like many Irish people, they left during the Potato Famine.
They travelled to somewhere around the Port Hope and Lake Scugog area where John died the following year.
Fortunately, there were other family members to help Jane raise the family. The family eventually married, had
children and settled up around Port McNicoll/Victoria Harbour.
Their son John married Charlotte Atkinson, they are my great grandparents, their daughter Margaret Viola Ney is my grandmother.
Are you my any chance Harold Wesley - if so you are my third cousin.
Cheers!

Yep Nancy. That is me but it is Wesley Harold McLachlan but definitely only Wes.
If you have a look at our Ancestry Tree you will see I have this stuff most via the Minnesota Olsen/Russell/Neys but I always appreciate any primary evidence and citations. Have been sniffing around the relatives that may have supported Jane "Jennie" and her kids after John died. You will notice in the 1851 census a gang of Neys headed by Robert and Margaret who circumstantial evidence would suggest are John(1806)'s brother and sister-in-law but I would like clear direct evidence. Interestingly enough it appears that Robert kicked the bucket sometime between the 1851 and 1861 censuses and Margaret and the brood headed up to the Wingham area but I am following this up. This is fun! My Ney, Thomas, was a younger brother of your great granddad John. He was the only child of that generation to be born in Canada so I guess that makes me more Canadian than you in spite of now living in England :-)
Please feel free to get in touch direct via email as we have the makings of a Ney Canadian Club here what with Steve and some others such as connections of the Robert referred to above. As an aside, Nancy, we have just celebrated the birth of another Ney Nancy who will be the great great great great granddaughter of John and Jennie.
Regards
Wes

Matthew,
Pleasure to meet you. I think that Nancy, Wes, and I would love to know if we all have some common ancestors with you.
Here is our link back to Ireland:
JOHN NEY was born October 28, 1806 in Drung, Knockbride Parish, County Cavan, and died January 01, 1850 in Port Darlington, Durham County, Ontario, Canada.
He married JANE (JENNIE) WILSON, on July 13, 1838 in Knockbride, County Cavan, Ireland, daughter of ? WILSON and ??. She was born 1809 in Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ireland and died May 29, 1890 in Tay Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada.
Any mentions of John and Jane in your lineage?steve.tippin@gmail.com

Hey! Did anyone ever end up making a group for the Canadian Ney’s? Lol
I am the daughter of Michael Ney (my grandfather Elgin Ney, Great grandfather Stewart Ney, great-great grandfather John Ney)
My grandfather was from Burks Falls, ON.
my research shows John was born in County Cavan Ireland in 1839, and married to Sarah A. Johnston (born in Scotland in 1846).
I also have record of another John Ney born in Ireland, 1813-1882 and passed in Simcoe County, ON Canada (my great-great-great grandfather), married to an Ann Maxwell (born in Ireland 1818-1895).
Are these the same Johns that you are mentioning? Or different Johns? Brothers with the same name? I don’t have any mention of a Jane Ney so I am stumped.
I remember a mention of an “Auntie Viola” so I know for sure there is a relation somehow.Looking up Ney it shows that those specifically from Cavan County Ireland (us!) ‘Ney’ is the anglicized version of Mac Niadh & McNee. interesting stuff for sure. I’ve been trying to trace to see where specifically it was changed, so you having mention of the ‘Neay’ in the letter of reference is also very interesting!
Anywho, I know I am a couple of years late to the party here but if anyone happens to see this it would be great to try and piece the puzzle together!
Thanks,
Caitlyn

@Cait Ney - hello - hopefully a distant cousin! Must admit I haven't been too active on my ancestry lately. If you are on Ancestry - you can check my family tree - you may find some connection to our Ney families my tree is: Ney/Allsopp/Giraldeau (rev). I'll check your names after the holidays to try to connect. My maternal grandmother was a Ney (descendant of Robert Ney from County Cavan)
Merry Christmas!
