Hello, I am Bill McDermott from Santa Cruz, CA, USA.
I am attempting to find my GG-Grandfather's (Andrew Dermott or McDermott) roots and have located an entry in an 1827 Applotment Record in the Townland of Curleck, Knockbridge Parish, Co Cavan. This record shows John, Peter, Andrew and Phillip Dermott. It appears that John is the father. This is the only hint I have come up with to date.
- The scant information I have is that Andrew was born about 1801, married a Nancy Carson and immigrated to Canada sometime in the 1830-1850 period with at least two sons, John Carson and Hugh C., perhaps there were additional children.
- I will be in Ireland the first three weeks of April 2015 and am hoping something will surface prior to my trip either through my efforts or this post. I am planning on spending most of my time in Co. Roscommon and Dublin but would be overjoyed to spend time in Cavan researching.
- If any of this sounds at all familiar please contact me with any information you may have.
Sincerely,
Bill McDermott

Hi Bill
No luck with birth/baptism record for Andrew on www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site) but this marriage record was interesting. (I couldn't find one with Carson :
You might want to have a look at the 1821 Irish Census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
which has 24 Dermotts & 325 McDermotts in Cavan.
PRONI might also be worth a look - name search option
Nothing on ancestry

Hello Col,
- Thank You for the very quick research and reply. I spent much of last night and this morning trying to access the first link in your response. I had no luck getting to the link, but found many other possibilities from the words within the link. I also tried two different browsers in the process as my normal browser provided no results. Is there any way you can provide me with a better way to access that link?
- The marriage of Andrew Dermot to Bridget Boyle is a completely different combination that will point me in a different direction on immigration and local research too if I don't find that they stayed in Ireland on further research.
- I've spent all my time on that first trail and WILL be going to the 1821 Census (new to me) and back to PRONI when I get back to my research again (hopefully tomorrow morning).
- If you can think of another way I can access the Marriage data, or if you have any other thoughts on my research, please let me know. I look forward to yur reply!
Thank You Very, Very much,
Bill

Bill,
It is difficult to get accurately back before 1864 & the trick is to try and find someone's records that brings you within that i.e a death or a birth of a sibling etc. Carson would not be as common a name in co. Cavan and in 1901 census, there are 33 about a third are Catholic, so you need to check all religions. Remember to naming patterns, the names repeat in families. I searched for Nancy Carson, but nothing turned up for her on ancestry. On the Will Calendars 12 Carsons turn http://www.willcalendars.nationalarchives.ie.
I looked at Grave records for Knockbride, but nothing turned up for Carsons their. There are still McDermotts in the area, DNA would be the next thing you could do when you come. Though having done that myself, you get confirmation that there is a match but what the relationship is, I have not figured that yet.
You could also email Cavan Genealogy. cavangenealogy@eircom.net they may be able to help you. Let me know how you get on and if I can help you further, I will try. Regards CarmelBailieborough Cavan

Hi Bill
Sorry, the marriage record was a cut and paste from rootsireland to which I subscribe.
I'll send it to your email.
Looks like some helpful info from Carmel above
