Hi,

I was wondering if any of the cemeteries in this area have been transcribed online? And, if someone can recommend photographic and historical resources for this area that are online? I don't think I'll get further back on this branch, but would like to find photos and information on the area to include in my tree.

Researching: The family of Rose Smith, baptized 1831, Seeoram, Knockbridge, RC, to parents Laurence Smith and Anne Clarke, sponsors:James Smith and Rose Dempsy (RootsIreland record. I have Rose's following records, but no information prior to this.) I've searched the Tithe Applotmant listings and the Griffths Valuation.

Thanks!

  • Hi Samantha, the church at Knockbride West was built in 1845 and the current graveyard was opened in 1989, most families in the area were buried in Drumgoon or Moybologue, I do not have transcriptions for either, but if you contact Cavan Genealogy they are at :

    1st floor,

    Johnston Central Library,
    Farnham Street,
    Cavan Town,
    County Cavan.
    Tel: +353 (0)49 4361094
    Fax: +353 (0)49 433149  email cavangenealogy@eircom.net

They should be able to help you.

  • Hi Samantha, having sent the above message, it did not make sense, as my grandfather is buried there and I realise the information relates to the new part of the graveyard.  I have a list of the headstones there & I will go through them for you, but do also check out with Cavan Genealogy as people did go back to their old burial grounds and married women, if they died young were buried with their family, so you would have to look for them on their parents headstones.

  • Hi Samantha, I have looked through my lists, there was a older church in Knockbride and it was thought that there was no cemetary attached.  However the following are listed

    1. Rose Smith who died 10th Oct 1938, her sister Katie, and Margaret, but their father was Phil, he died 1978 & his wife Annie die 1982, no townland is given.

    2. James Smith, Beglieve died 1976 aged 73.

    3. John Smith, Threecarvagh, died 1955.

    4. Hugh Smyth 1912, Michael 1919, Margaret 1925, Susan 1945, Ellen mcNamee 1969 & Patrick Smyth 1971, Lakeland.

    5. James Clarke, Seeorum died 1924 aged 55, his son Patrick died 1926 agd 29, his mother Ann Clarke

    6. Terence Smyth, Threecarvagh erected this stone in memory of his wife Margaret Smith who departed 18th Nov 1851 aged 54.

I have given you all the references to Smith/Smyths, in case the family moved or they may be related & only one reference to Clarke as they were in Seeorum, there are numerous Clarkes, I take it that you reckon that Rose Smith did not marry.  I found no Dempseys at all.

  • Thank you, Carmel.

I really appreciate your reply and the time you spent looking up the information for me. I'll use it to help me trace the rest of Rose's family, if possible.

I apologize, I should have been clearer. I have Rose's marriage (1864) and death certificates, both events took place in Scotland. I don't know when she left for Scotland or with whom.

I don't have any Ireland information other than her baptism in 1831 in Seeoram.

I was wondering what cemetery I might find information on her parents Laurence Smith & Ann Clarke and the Smiths/Clarkes around that time period. Laurence was listed as deceased on Rose's 1864 marriage record. I couldn't find his death in Scotland, nor could I find Ann's, so I thought they may have died in Ireland.

Are there any cemeteries or places you'd reccomend visiting? I'm making a list of family places for an eventual trip to Ireland!

I'll also contact the genealogy department in Cavan, as suggested.

    Thanks again & Best.

  • Samantha, when you come you can go to the Valuations office in Dublin and look up the cancelled rent books for that townland, you will see all the names of the people that would live there usually not more than 20 or so families, you can take photos of the pages & then once at homne decipher the information. A lot of family left these counties for Scotland, my own family went in 1860's and came back in 1880's.  I have found the Scotlands peoples website an excellent source, when some of the children were registered, the number of previous children may be noted etc and I found a death cert of a relative and his mother's maiden name was mentioned so look at all their certs, census and other information.  Yes you can visit Moybologue and Drumgoon.  Also look to see are there any wills available, FamilySearch.org may have information they may make mention of relatives and this is another source  The problem is that Civil Registration started in 1864 & we have to substitute the missing information with other means etc.
