I will be in the Knockbride area in September because my Great-Great Grandfather James McCabe is from there and I want to at least see the area, but was wondering if there is a cemetery or other places I can visit to look for information on my ancestors. Are there McCabes in the area that might know something about the family history back to 1850? Are there records available at the local Catholic church? Any other sources of information?

  • Hi,

I have found a website for St Brigids cemetary in Knockbride Cavan where you can search for graves http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2479382.

You will have to do the search yourself but if you could give me more details on James MCCabe in particular his birth details I may be able to help.

Alternatively you can get in contact with Knockbride parish churche the link I have sent you is for the Kilmore diosces http://www.kilmorediocese.ie/diocese/parishes/30-knockbride.

When I went looking for the MC Cabes I found that they were shop owners in the area and owned one of the two shops in town.

The following is a link for the store I think http://www.mccabefeeds.com/About.php.

I hope this information will be helpful and if you require more help let me know.

    Regards

    Shane

  • Thanks Shane for the info. I have the following information about the family:

    Father: John McCabe

    Mother: Anne Clarke

    Childen:

    Owen - born 1836

    James - born 1835

    Catharine - born 1841

    Daphne - born 1845

I know that all except for maybe John and Daphne left Ireland. I suspect Daphne died at an early age. I have baptism records for James and Daphne. Their address is listed as Tulawaltra in KNOCKBRIDE parish, which I'm guessing is the same as Tullawaltry.

  • Hi Chris,

There are 3 grave yards attached to Knockbride, 2 in East & 1 in West Knockbride & West Knockbride is the graveyard you need.  It is situated in Tunnyduff.  The current priest may not be the best to approach, he covers both churches in Knockbride.

To get your research off to a quick start, seeing as you are coming in September, I think you should contact Cavan Genealogy

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm Or you might try Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) which will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the familymay have owned (as it usually passed on to a relation).

I searched the 1901 census but there are no McCabes there at that time, lots of Clarkes

having said that there a lots of McCabes in Co Cavan

You could also write to the local paper & put your query & all your information addressed to The Editor,

email address linda@anglocelt.ie  This has a wide readership & hopefully you will get some results.

Let me know how you got on & if you need me to 'read' any certificates etc let me know.
