My grandfather John Mahood was born abt 1779 in Curleck Twp.  He married Elizabeth and had following children: Robert (born 23 March 1826 and baptized 2 Apr 1826 ), Alexander (b. 12 July 1828 (baptized / 27 July 1828 in Corleck, Knockbride Parish, Cavan Ireland), Joseph (.my g-grandfather was born 02 Mar 1833), Isabella (baptized  06 Sept 1835 in Curleck, Knockbride Parish).    I have copies of Church of Ireland Baptismal records for the children, however, I was hoping to find Elizabeth's maiden name.  The Tithe Applotment List of 1827 of County Cavan, Ireland shows John holding 5 ½ acres in the townland of Corleck and paying 3 shillings and ten pence, and 4 acres in the townland of Drumeague, paying 3 shillings and 1 ½ pence. They are adjoining townlands in Knockbride Parish, County Cavan.

They all left Ireland for Canada around 1835//36.  I would also like to know John's parent's names if possible.  Sample of recrod below.  Thank you so much for trying to assist with my research.

  • The usual way to locate the maiden surname for the mother of a Church of Ireland couple would be to search for a likely marriage, if dates of available records allow. The RootsIreland source list shows transcripts of marriages are included in their system for this parish back to 1812, so could include a marriage for John and Elizabeth if that's where they married. (Marriage records for the parish held by the RCB Library only cover back to 1827)

Baptisms are only available for the parish back to 1825, so not early enough to search for origins of John or his family in this parish.

Ask them can they get you a copy of the original, in the hope that there may be another name on it that was indecipherable by the transcribers.

  • Hi all :)

I'm sure you've all made lots of discoveries since the original post which I've only just seen.

We're direct descendents of both John and Joseph Mahood (brothers) who emigrated to Australia from County Cavan in 1840 and 1858, and we're currently researching family the tree in Knockbride.

We've come across an amazing extract from the National Folklore Collection (www.duchas.ie), Schools Collection Vol 1015, Pages 462 to 462f which references the family in Knockbride and relationship to the Rev McWhidd. Wonderful resource. John, you may not have seen this?

John Mahood who married Catherine Wallace was Joseph's brother and we're trying to map out their other siblings (we suspect Alexander of Kinnea was one). Absolutely certain that they occupied the whole cluster of buildings at the intersection of Lisdonan and Roosky at one point or another. Fantastic to view on Google Street View but can't wait to get over to Ireland one day.

  • Thanks Kree - very interesting about McWhidd. I am glad that you have found the link to John and Joseph Mahood.

Could you share the known facts?

    Any clue to the parents?

I have lots of stray bits of Mahood facts and would like to confirm them.
