Looking to find the ancestors of Catherine and the town she was born. She was born in Clare about 1853. She was the daughter of John Talty and Margaret McNerney (McInerney).  She married Thomas Gorman and they emmigrated to the U.S. around 1870.  They lived in Buffalo, NY.  She had 11 children.  She died in 1913 in Buffalo. Family stories say she had brothers who went to Australia.

  • Dear Patg:  Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.  You should check the Clare Library website for information about Clare ancestors.  The link is below:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm    The Talty surname was very common in West Clare, and pariticularly in the parishes of Doonbeg and Mullagh.  You might look at the sources available for the parishes of Kilrush, Kilfarboy (Milltown Malbay).  Some of those parish registers are online through the Clare Library.  There are other resources on the website that you should also view and you will see them through the above link.  In addition, I will forward this post to one of our volunteers from that area and who would be able to give a more complete reply.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Dear Jane, thank you.  It has taken me quite a time to find her parents' names.  I am looking at the Clare Library site. I am hoping to find more !

  • Patg,

I have Cty Clare relatives too.  I receive messages from posts. Jane has helped me in my research in the past.

The Civil records are available now.  The marriage of your Catherine and Thomas Gorman are in this PDF file.  You should be able to see it if you cut and paste it in your browser.  The website will ask you to click that you are not a robot and then enter your name and click on the box to agree to their terms.  I attached the record too.

The births from 1864 to 1916 are available at this site

You can view images of deaths after about 1878.  Marriages are viewable after 1870.  The District I found your record was Kilrush. Note on the marriage record a Kate McInerney and Thomas Clancy as witnesses.  Guessing Kate is a relative and Thomas could be one.

(In my own research I am using witnesses at weddings and godparents as clues to possible relationships.
