I'm trying to trace my husbands side, his g-g-grandmother Jane Leddy was an Irish Orphan, part of the Earl Grey Scheme who departed Plymouth for Sydney 28 October 1849 on the ship "Thomas Arbuthnot". In 1852 she married George Dunn in Sydney.  I think Jane worked at one of the workhouses.  Janes ship records say she was born about 1833, her parents Denis and Ellen are both dead and she was a house servant, Roman Catholic, in good health who can read and is from "Drygan, Clare".  I can't find a Drygan or any records before her departure.  Thank you for your help.

  • Hi:

I had a quick look for you at the  following link:  http://www.irishfaminememorial.org/en/ under the database tab and I see the reference to your great-great-grandmother, Jane Leddy.

It is possible that Drygan was in Ennistimon (just misspelled) as Drinagh.  I will have a look at the parish registers in Tulla for you anyway.

I will get back to you within a week or so.

There is a Facebook page for the Earl Grey Scheme and if you are on facebook, please make sure to join it.

Let me know if there is any further help that you need.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi,

I still haven't got much further but I have obtained Jane's Death Certificate which states she was born in Innes which I think might be a misspelling of Ennis, County Clare and she was 79 years at time of death of 19 May 1913 and therefore making her birth year about 1834..

Desperate for any details of parents Denis and Ellen Leddy or any siblings.  Denis was a farmer.

Jane was unable to write or sign her name.

    thanks,

    Iris

  • Hi Iris:

I have had a look for you in the Tulla register for those years, but unfortunately, there are no Liddy/Leddy that match your search.

In addition, I looked at the ennis parish records that are online and again, nothing came up.

It might be worth your while to write to the Ennistymon parish priest with regard to looking up the records that he may have and giving him the Drinagh townland.

If you come across any new information, (sibling, mother's maiden name, etc.) please email me at:  tulla@irelandxo.com and I will try to assist you further.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
