Hi Janice,
According to Australian records his mother was Mary Carroll, Gooney is a very unusual name.
There are 3 births in Tulla, Co. Clare 1860's surname Gooney
There is a marriage record in the US for a Bridget Cooney, father Patrick, mother Mary Carroll.

Thanks for replying Brendan
Yes I have James 's marriage certificate with Mary Carroll as mother, but can't seem to find a James Gooney under births in Ireland around 1860. Wondered as he didn't list his mother on the Immigration record ? if she had died or something. There is a marriage for a Patrick Gooney to Bridget Minopue in 1866 which has a James Gooney in household as Patrick\'s father. (long shot!)
I looked at births for a Patrick Gooney around 1830's but couldn't find any from the area. (one in Meath)
so a bit stumped. Will check out the Bridget connection
Cheers

Hi Janice,
Civil registration did not start for Catholics until 1864, Clare and Catholic baptism records for Carlow are not online, they are held by Clare and Carlow genealogical societies.
I would order one of the birth records for Gooney in Tulla, Clare, the record costs 4 euro, if the mother is Mary Carroll you know you have the correct family. I am in the GRO tomorrow, I can check it out for you, no charge.

Your a star Brendan, would be great to find the family link.
We are heading over to UK in August and plan to be in Ireland so was hoping to have a rough idea where the family originated.
Cheers
