Slattery, Clongaheen, Broadford, Co Clare

Liam, There are a number of "Slattery's" recorded for Cloonlgaheen West in Griffith's Valuations which was printed in 1852. See www.askaboutireland.ie - parish of Killokennedy. It would be helpful if you gave the name of the particular family and the years they were resident in the parish. Regards,

McCoy, Thanks for the quick reply - much appreciated. My specific interest is in Con Slattery of Clongaheen West and his wife Bridget Hynes of Woodfield - they married in 1908 and farmed at Clogaheen West. He died in 1946, his death reported by their daughter Delia. Bridget died before that but not clear when or where. They had 5 daughters Mary b 1908 - went to NY in 1928, no further info found Anne b 1910 - went to NY in 1926 with sister Margaret, came back and married Patrick Carey of Flagmount in 1944 - they may have inherited the farm after Cons death? Margaret b 1911 - went to NY in 1926 with Anne, came home in 1933 but went back to NY in 1935 and was working in a hospital in Brooklyn in 1940 - no further info found Bridget 'Delia' b 1913 - stayed at home and was there when her father died in 1946 Catherine b 1915 - may have died young as no further info found. Con, b 1863, was the son of John Slattery (1833-1913) and Anne Carey (1836-1906). Johns father may have been Patrick but I dont have any evidence to support this. Killokennedy cemetery may be where the family graves are but I have not found any listings - its not in the Clare library site for example. Any help appreciated including if you come across contact details for living descendants who might be able to fill some of the gaps. Liam

Liam, There is an entry for the birth of a John Slattery to John Slattery and Anne Carey in the Register for Bridgetown, Co. Clare in 1866. You will find it on www.irishgenealogy.ie. Entry No. 392 In regard to John Slattery, Senior - Tithe Records for 1825 have 15 entries for "Slattery" in Clongaheen - two for a Patrick. The records of Griffith's Valuations are held in Dublin www.valoff.ie They are known as Revision Books. There is a Site Timelinegenealogyclerkservice which offers to obtain details of the various transfers of the land in Cloongaheen West from Griffith's registration. There fee is 45 Euro. This should show who John Slattery inherited from. Regards,

Liam, Regarding John Slattery, Senior, there is a record of a Patt Slattery being baptised on January 11th 1858 to parents John Slattery and Anne Carey. Address: Clongaheen. Baptismal Sponsors: Martin Slattery and Catherine Slattery, Clongaheen. The 1911 Irish census records John Slattery as 84 years of age, which would put him as being born c1830. It is likely that Patt (Patrick) born in January 1858 was his first son and he was called after John's father which was the custom in Ireland until recently. Liam, Regarding burial place of Con Slattery - Clongaheen Please see Kilbane graveyard - Row 1 - Plots 21 and 22 - Paddy Carey - Clongaheen - No Headstone There are a number of people from the townland of Clongaheen buried in this cemetery - James Slattery, Wife Bridget and Son John and members of the Torpey family. It is likely that this Paddy Carey is the husband of Annie Slattery? I will check with the Caretaker of the cemetery in the New Year. Hi Liam: Thank you for your post to the IrelandXO message board. I have access to the recently published book on Broadford parish that Pat O'Brien, a well-known local historian published. The Slattery family's parish would have been Killokennedy, so they are most likely buried there as McCoy indicated. The Clare Library has published a number of the local graveyards which have been transcribed by volunteers affiliated with various local history and community organisations such as Clare Roots Society. The Killokennedy graveyard was also transcribed and the headstones are listed at this link: https://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/graves/kil… The graveyard is Kilbane which is just outside Broadford village. I am in contact with several people and I will find out about the Slatterys and see who would know. This is local information and I will come back to you via this thread. Liam, Regarding burial place of Con Slattery Cloongagheen, Broadford, I was informed today by a Cemetery Caretaker for the Broadford area that he did not find any record for Con Slattery. In regard to the entry in the Kilbane cemetery - Paddy Carey, Clonlagheen - Row 6 - Plots 21 and 22 - there is a possibility that those may be the family graves, having regard to the fact that Con's wife - Bridget Hynes - was from that area? Family recorded in Civil records for Patrick Carey and Annie Slattery: Bridget - November 1945 - Roger - January 1947.
