I'm interested in Linchy families in Clondagad parish. The Tithe Appotlment books show Linchys in the parish in the 1820s. I'm trying to connect my US immigrant ancestor Dennis Linchey to his roots in Ireland. Dennis arrived with three other Irish boys in Virginia in 1718, all as indentured servants. One of the other boys was a Thomas Grady. The DNA of my  family (the spelling turned into Lindsey in Virginia) is Irish Type III and this points me to the Dalcassian families of Clare for Dennis's ancestry. Since the Gradys are another Dalcassian family and since both Linchys and Gradys were in Clondagad parish on the Tithe Applotment lists, I wonder if Dennis Linchey's roots may lie in or near Clondagad parish.

  • Hello Wm, I have been asked to look back at some unanswered queries and I am sure you are aware that the Irish reliance on parish reocrds do not go back to that time, the unusual spellings used should make and finding easier but spellings change over the years, however McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland uses both spellings but some in the north he gives as coming from the Scottish Lindsay (famous family apparently) under Lynch and Linchy he says it is found in a few counties including Clare, the initial family Lynch appears appears to be from the De Lench in Galway, Norman name who arrived in 1170 AD and the other Lynch is from the Gaelic meaning Mariner.

The very early Linchy list from 1649 shows the name in Clare but later ones are all in the north of the country, most in Northern Ireland, now part of the UK.

You could try the Clare Library or Archives and there are numerous private Facebook groups dealing in Genealogy and DNA testing to locality but a lot of the DNA users are on many sites as they like yourself are not sure, also your autosomal DNA will hardly go back that far.

Hope this is of some assistance.
