Hello,

my father Valentine Hehir was born in Cork, one of six. His parents were Bridget and Michael Hehir. Three of the children were Catholic and the other three Protestant!  I understand the Hehir name is best known in Clare, and I recall Ennis being mentioned by my grandmother, but I am afraid it is all a bit vague.  How can I get started in finding out more about them?

    The first thing you need t do is narrow down place of origin. As your father would have been born after civil registration began in Ireland, you should be able to find his birth certificate in civil records. These are available from the General Register?s Office. Here are their contact details:
