I will be visiting Ireland for one week beginning 18 August 2019 and I am looking for any help in finding out  more about my second great grandfather, Michael O'Brien (c. 1811 - 1890).  My research indicates that Michael was from Clare County, most likely from Clare Castel (or Clare Abbey). Ennis.  He and his children migrated to America in about 1864.  I have what appears to be handwritten notes regarding his childrens' baptisms at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Killoe.  I have also researched  Griffiths Valuation and Tithe Applotment records and believe he may have lived in Kilow, Clare Abbey.  Does Ireland Reaching Out have a volunteer in the Ennis area who might be able to help me locate information on my  O'Brien relatives?  I have attached a Word document with more detailed on my O'Brien research to date.

  • Hi Bill:

    Many thanks for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.

    I would recommend that you definitely make a visit to the Local Studies Centre in Ennis during your stay there.  There are two wonderful Archivists who will be able to assist you with research and point you in the right direction.  In addition, they have a lot of resources within the study facility which you will be able to access.  Their hours are:  M-f 10-1 2-5:30.  Friday is a late night until 8 pm.  They are open on Saturdays from 10-2 pm.  Their website is:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/library/local-studies/tracing_your_fam…;

    If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to get back to me.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

    I was locked out yesterday for some reason and could not comment.

    For Dublin, you may want to try this site www.irishgenealogy.ie which has Dublin city church records.

    While in Ireland, you probably wan to visit the National Library of Ireland.http://www.nli.ie/ You could review the microfilm for Clarecastle parish. By the way, sometime this summer the National Library plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching.

    I would not visit the General Register Office since it appears your family left Ireland before 1864 when civil registration started.

    I see Jane has provided info on Ennis.

    Enjoy your trip.
