My gggf Nicholas Burke left Ireland for Melbourne Australia in 1854.  I have had an enormous amount of trouble locating his life in Ireland.

Recently I found a Missing Persons notice looking for a Nicholas Burke formerly of O'Briens Castle in the parish of Inchicronan or island, county clare, place by his sister Mrs Mary Walsh and cousin Francis Neelon, both in America.

If this is my Nicholas, I now know that he had a sister Mary..

I have it that he married a Mary Maloney from county clare in 1854 and they left England at Plymouth for Hobart Australia on the Duchess of Northumberland in 1854, arriving Dec. 6th. There was also a Bridget and a Elizabeth Burke aboard the same voyage.  They had 11 children all born in Australia.  I have no details of his parents but I have her parents as Patrick (Peter) Maloney and Mary (nee Johanna).

This is about as much info I know.  I am unable to find a marriage cert.  I have a baptism entry for a Nicholas Burke in 1828 in Annaghdown and this is the most likely one going by all other documents I have on the Aust. end.

How would they get from Clare to probably Dubin to go to England?  This must have been a long haul before they even got to Plymouth to get on a boat.  Are there any documents for people going from Ireland to England?  I had no thought of any of our family going to America.  If I had Nicholas's siblings names then I could trace the family that way.

I don't know, I am a bit bamboozled right now and I am trying to learn about Ireland's history so I have a better understanding.

I hope someone else out there is trying to trace this same family and we can swap notes, I have alot on the Aussie end of things.

  • Dear Jen:

I just ready your post and I thought that I would respond to you to try a few avenues.

First of all, you sound like you have made great progress to be have gotten so far on so little information.  The Crusheen parish registers are online at www.crusheen.com/heritage inchicronan tab.  While the registers only start in 1860, you may be able to trace siblings, descendants and possibly neighbours to make some connections.

Secondly, the Clare County Library website will be very useful for you.  Their address is:  www.clarelibrary.ie/genealogy.  There is a lot of donated material on this site and it is a matter of trawling through it:  passenger ship lists arranged by location, alphabetically, graveyard inscriptions that have been transcribed, birth, marriage death registers, etc.  You will have to look through a lot of this.  In addition, you can also access Griffith's Valuatiion which was done in 1855 in County Clare by either parish or by surname.  This may be helpful to you and the same goes for the Tithe Applotment Books (1826).

The very best of luck to you and if you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
