Unfortunately, the RC church records for Ennistymon do not start until 1870 so you won't find a baptismal record for Tobias.

The only leads I can provide would be the Tithe listings from the late 1820s. The first two links are the Connell and Oconnell records in the Tithes for Kilmanaheen civil parish which includes Ennistymon. You will see a number of Michaels. First, we don' know if the father of Tobias was captured in the Tithes but if he was, he is likely one of the Michaels listed. Second, many of the townlands listed are badly misspelled. The third link below is the offical list of townlands for the parish. For example, Clouncout is likely Clooncoul.

Many thanks for your response.  Yes, I'm not suprised about the lack of church records.  I've been finding nothing on other searches.

Unfortunately too, there is no way I can relate Michael to any of the Tithes, as we simply know he was a tailor, and that he died before 1869.  We can only speculate that he lived in Ennistimon too.  If we were to visit the area, is there any record office that could help?  Grave lists perhaps?

Locally you stop at the library branch  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/library/branches/enstylib.htm   You can also send them an e-mail and see if there are other sources in the town.

Many thanks.  That was a great tip, and I was amazed to see how much user-supplied data they held.  Just spent several hours online,  searching through any records that could possibly include births in 1846 +/-2 years to no avail sadly.  Still, very much worth a try.
