We are searching for information on John and Cornelius O’Loughlin and James Vaughan from nearby to Ennistymon.

John and Cornelius O’Loughlin were assisted passengers down to Australia in 1841.  Their father was Laurence and came from just outside of Ennistymon.  Their mother was Mary Conlon(Connellan).  John and his wife Mary Barry also took their 6 month old son Patrick on the voyage.  It is believed that there were sisters Ann and Catherine.

Things were very difficult at that time and neither brothers were educated.  They farmed and eventually had their own farms and found jobs for Clare people escaping from the famine and hardships at that time.  Cornelius married Ann Barry and had 12 children, the eldest son Laurence became a member of Parliament and returned to Ireland in 1913 to support Home Rule. He visited the home where his father was born and met his cousins just outside of Ennistymon.  His cousins may have been females so not O’Loughlin.

His sister Hanorah married James Vaughan who went down to Australia about 1880.  His father was John and it is said that his 4 brothers went to America.

We have searched all records for 30 years and would be grateful if anyone has any information.

  • Can you tell me more about James Vaughan.  I have been looking for a James Vaughan whose father was John Vaughan and mother was Catherine Cahill.  They were from Letteragh, Kilmaley Parish, Co. Clare. He had a brother named John Vaughan who died in Queensland Australia in 1886.  Family lore says that James' grand daughter visited Kilmaley in the 1980's and she lived in Melbourne.

  • Have you used "Trove.Digitalises newspapers"  It has an extensive coverage of Australian newspapers and I notice that there are numerous reports of Laurence (Larry) O' Loughlin. There are probably reports on other members ofd his family.

  • Hello,  a Myria (sp??) Vaughan was  the god-mother of James Malone in 1855 at St Joseph's Church, Milltown Malbay, Clare. John Mc Mahon was the other sponsor.

James was the son of Anthony Malone and Bridget Anne Murray from Cloonbony, Milltown Malbay.

He went to South Australia on the Holmsdale in 1879.

Anthony died in 1866 and Bridget (known as Anne) went to South Australia with 3 of her sons (in 1882/83 on the Corona.

  • Hi Pam

There may be a connection between James Vaughan and Kilmaley, Ireland. There is an article in the Pinnaroo and Border Times, Friday, 17 September 1920 on the marriage between Mary Lilian, second daughter of Mr and Mrs James Vaughan of “Kilmaley” Pinnaroo, who married Thomas Joseph Miller. It's possible that James named his farm "Kilmaley" after his place of birth. The article can be accessed through Trove.

  • Dear Jennifer, it has taken me quite a while to get back on this site so have just discovered your message. Strangely enough, I have just reconnected with my cousin in South Australia and he has told me about your connection to a James Vaughan whose father was John and mother was Cahill.  We both agree that it sounds like a strong possibility. I am James Vaughans great grand daughter from Melbourne and in 1979 I drove through Kilmaley looking for my Vaughan ancestor. At the post office I was directed to a little cottage with an elderly man Vaughan who assured me that all his family went to America but somehow I felt I was in the right place. I have a photo but it is in my house in Bell Harbour, Clare. I am currently living in Greece but will return to Clare in the first half of next year, 2016.  I have just learnt that James's house in South Australia was named Kilmaley making it more than likely it is where he was from. There is also a connection to O'Loughlin connection in Lisroe Kilmaley and James married Hanora O'Loughlin in South Australia.  Jennifer, are you living in Ennistymon. I would be very interested in your family tree. Are you on Ancestry.com?  Hope to hear from you.
