My Lyons ancestors have been traced to Muingyroogeen townland in Clonmeen civil parish. One of them is buried in Kilcorney Old Graveyard next to a John Lyons from Crinnaloo. I wondered if the two famllies are connected and would like to hear from anybody interested in the Lyons families in the area.

Dear John
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Do you have any names and dates in particular? If we could find some records we may see that connection in the witness names on marriage certificates or sponsors on baptismal records.
Best wishes

I have checked Banteer parish register, Griffiths Valuation etc. My earliest ancestral record is the marriage of John Lyons & Johanna Moynihan at Banteer on 20 November 1852. At that date there were several Lyons families at Muingyroogeen (often given the address of Knockeenatuder, the adjacent townland, and apparently the older name used for the whole immediate area). Since Banteer parish register only starts in 1828 linking these Lyons families is next to impossible.
However John & Johanna Lyons had as their immediate neighbour in Muingyroogeen a man called Timothy Lyons who was involved in a land dispute during the 1880s, appears in the 1901 and 1911 censues (whereas my ancestors had already gone) and died in 1908. There is an undated gravestone at Kilcorney Old Graveyard to "Timothy Lyons of Meenacrogeen, Banteer" which stands beside another to "John Lyons of Corindalliu" died 1833. This may be the same man or perhaps another man of the same name.
Despite the eccentric spelling, this suggests an earlier link between the familes in Muingyroogeen and Crinnalloo. There are no Lyons left at Muingyroogeen but there are some still resident in Crinnallo and I wondered whether they, or other people with local knowledge, might know more about the background to the Lyons.
Regards,
John Lyons

Dear John
I hope someone researching this family sees your post at some point. In the meantime I wonder would it be of any assistance to check the local news for details of the land dispute. If it was reported it might only be of passing interest, but nonetheless?
You can use the Irish Newspaper Archives Site:
http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/
If you have a Facebook account the Cork Genealogical Society has a very active FB page that might be helpful. Unfortunately we don?t yet have a volunteer in Clonmeen
Best wishes

Hello John - have just joined the Clonmeen group and saw your message - just a sliver of information for you, which may be of interest to you - my great uncle Parick Delaney was baptised at Glantane church (near Banteer) on 14 June 1869 and one of his godparents was a Daniel Lyons - guessing as a godparent he would have been born at least 20 years earlier. Daniel Lyons may or may not be actually related to my family, or just a neighbour. He could more than likely be one of your relatives though, hope this may help.
Patrick's parents (my great grandparents) were Matthew Delaney and Mary (nee Collins) - Mary was born in Gortmore, Banteer in 1838 the daughter of Mathew Collins and Ellen Kelleher - both of Gortmore and whilst I have been researching my Gortmore/Banteer/Creggane/Glantane families in different archives the name Lyons does crop up in these areas quite a bit.
Best wishes - Pat

Many thanks for making contact. One difficulty in making progress with my research is that the same combinations of surname and forenames keep croppping up all over the place and there is no way ot linking them to my direct line unless there is a clear connection with the townlands of Muingyroogeen, Knockeenatuder or Kilmacurrane. One day it may be possible to understand the complete picture but until I can link up with somebody who descends from my grandfather's immediate family then this is just a long term dream.
Good luck with your own research,
John Lyons
