My gggradmother Mary Taaffe and her sisters Bridget and Anne were born to George Taaffe, Jr. and Mar Murphy in Shanballysallagh, Kikeedy, in the early 1840s. I know there are Taaffes in Corofin, but have no idea how we are related. Any hints and/or help will be appreciated.

Hi there,
There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Kilkeady (Killaloe). These date from 1833 for baptismal records and 1870 for marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2473. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.
Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
There is an excellent website you should look at by Clare County Library: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm
You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).
There is a book about Kilkeedy you might find interesting. It is by Frank Brew, called ' The parish of Kilkeedy a local history compiled'. 1998.
The Irish Times have a link where you can see the frequency of the name and any variants in speilling from the mid-19th century: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=
Hopfeully someone living in the local community will recognise the name and be able to help you further.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,
Sinead Cooney

Hi:
I do know of Taaffes who live in Tubber, County Clare. You might also inqure through the Beagh Parish Webpage as they would also be quite close to Tubber and might know of relations.
Clare County Library, as Sinead stated above, is an excellent resource for information.
Best of luck with your research.
Jane.

I know this is an old post but, I believe my ancestor possibly married your ancestor. My couple distance great grandfather was Bryan McCullen born around 1700 married a woman named MaryTaaffe she was born around 1720.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. My Mary Taafe was not born until 1841, so we don't have a match there. I am amazed you were able to get back so far in Ireland, though. How did you do that? I am brickwalled on all my Irish lines around 1800.
Thanks again.

My family come from Kilkeedy parish. I was able to get a few more dates of birth from "RootsIreland.ie" although you do have to pay for that website but it is very handy.

Hello,
I, too, am researching in Kilkeedy parish. The information that you left I will use in my research of Winifred Hogan and John Slattery. Winifred was born 1n 1832 and John in 1827 so they are not included in the published records. I know that Kilkeedy was important in their lives because it was inscribed on their gravestone in Wisconsin, USA. Good luck in your search, Julia

I am new to my ancestry discovery but I have been very lucky. Ancestry.com has a lot of documents to prove that far back. I only know for 100% fact of mu ancestor Bryan McCullen via evidence. The others I know thanks to someone in the 70's writing a book about the McCullen family and doing lots of research. I do not have a copy of the book but I have meet relatives that do and have forwarded me info. He was born in Larne, Antrim Ireland. Best of luck in your search.

Hi, Jodi and Julie,
Welcome to the Hunt. Ancestry.com is a great source, as is Rootsireland.ie. The Clare Heritage Centre was also very helpful, back before the internet. Much of what I know about my Mary Taaffe also came from a book that a cousin wrote in 1976 about the Millericks. (Mary Taaffe married Michael Millerick in California in 1868.) That book was what started me on genealogy and led to me writing seven other books of my own. It is so important that we make these stories available to future generations. My Taaffe stories are pretty thin, though.
Thanks.

Hi Kevin, Jodie and Judy:
Kilkeedy parish also known as Tubber has quite a number of records online through the Clare Library website.
You might check through them and if you have any further questions, there is a gentleman from Clare Roots Society, who I can connect with to see if there is anything further.
All the best,
Jane
