My great great grandmother, Mary McMahon came to Victoria, Australia in 1852. She recorded on her marraige certificate and for the births of her children she came from Clare, Ireland. and her father was John McMahon, farmer, and her mother Bridget McNamara. I have looked at the Tithes, the Griffiths Valuation and searched for B,D&M. I have found in the Ireland Civil Reg of Deaths (index only) provided by ancestry.com, a John McMahon, aged 61; born abt 1803 who died 1864, the registration was registered at Killadysert. (Vol 19. p. 204; FHL film # 101582. Also in the same Civil registration index, the death of Bridget McMahon aged 60 born abt 1809; died 1869, also at Killadysert. (Vol 19; p. 223; FHL film # 101584). Looking on Roots Ireland website the County Clare death reg are not available so I don't know where else to search to perhaps view the full information on the death registrations. Can you help in verifying if these two people were my Mary McMahon's parents????
Thank you
Mwoody from Australia

Hi,
Do you have any idea what year Mary McMahon was born? McMahon is very much a Co. Clare name with loads of John's, Mary's and Bridget's.

Mwoody:
I agree with the caution from Irish Eyes. There are many McMahons in Co. Clare. If you do want to pursue the two records that you found on Ancestry, you have to contact the GRO to get copies of the records. Go to the link below. Hit the link which says death certificates in English. You will get a screen which asks for a User Name and Password. Hit Cancel. The form should appear. Fill out he form. Make sure you request a copy only. Provide the info from the record ( year of death, registration district and volume and page number). A copy costs around 4 euros. You can ask them to e-mail the copy back to you.

Hello Irish Eyes! Thank you for the quick reply. Mary was born abt 1829 - 1830. The passenger list has her as 22 on 28 Feb 1852. I have her marriage certificate (19 Apr 1855), where she is stated as 25. The birth of her children 1st & 2nd - I dont know. 3rd - Aug 1859 - 30yrs. 5th child Mar 1864 - 33 yrs. 6th Dec 1867 -38yrs. 7th child May 1869 40yrs. I think 1829 seems most likely. Her death certificate puts her as being born 1824 but there are other things wrong on that so I have discounted it for her age and birthdate.
The two deaths I mentioned are the only ones I have found that McMahon with a John & Bridget of the correct age so I am hopeful. Also somewhere along the line Cavan was mentioned. I know it is also a county but when I googled I found it also a locality (Village ???) in Clare. She definitely came from Co. Clare.
Cheers Mwoody

Thanks also to you Roger. Yes John McMahon, Mary McMahon and even Bridget seem to be everywhere!!!Thank you for the advice on getting the certificates. I think I will go ahead. I have replied separately to Irish Eyes which I hope you can access. This John & Bridget McMahon seem to be the correct age, though I wonder why Mary left for Australia if her parents were still alive. My other Irish ancestors left with brothers & sisters when the parents died. Mary seems to have been on her own when she left in 1852.
Thank you again for your quick and helpful reply!

I'm confused.
You say "My great great grandmother, Mary McMahon came to Victoria, Australia in 1852" and then you say "I wonder why Mary left for Australia if her parents were still alive" but you appear to expect to find death records for Mary's parents pre-1852 deaths in civil registration indexes which did not begin until 1864.
