I descend from Margaret Garvey, daughter of Patrick Garvey and Brigid Quinn of Ailemore, parish of Killaloe. She was baptized on October 30, 1840, and was the youngest child in her family. She immigrated with her father and siblings to the United States in 1851. Mother, Brigid, supposedly died in 1848 but I don't have any evidentiary support for her death date. Wondering if these Garveys appear in the book, Land & People of Killaloe and if so, I would make arrangements to purchase a copy. The Garveys (and Quinns) are my only known Killaloe ancestors, although i have reason to believe the Garveys were originally from Glenagalough. Anyway, appreciate being part of the Killaloe community on Ireland XO.

Hi Kurtis
I am receipt of your of message ; I am in the process of compiling a report for you, so I will get back to you in a few days.
RE: Land & People of Killaloe Parish by Sean Kierse
Your Patrick Garvey appears AILLEMORE TOWNLAND in the following pages:
106, 108, 109, 110 & 116
There is quiet a few Garvey's listed on the same page No, Michael, Patrick, Timothy, Thomas, Jeremiah, Darby, John and Mary. It would appear there is multpile family connections / bros / sist / uncles / aunt and/or parents.
To decode the Garvey families you also need to look at the Conway families. In the Registers transcriptions forthcoming, the Conway family are often sponsors and witness, or vice-a-versa.
Quinn families are very limtied at the Killaloe Parish, Ellen & John Quinn and a Morty Quin.
I would be worth your while to obtain a copy of the book for yourself.
RE: BRIDGET GARVEY, death record (abt) 1848.
I have searched through the Bridgetown Cemetery Records I have transcribed ; there is no surviving grave listed nor is there a grave at the Killaloe Cemetery. 1848 was right in the middle of the great potato famine. At that time there was a number of mass graves, where the priest's output (during the great famine) exceeded the input of new Baptisms.

Roger and Jeff:
Thank you for your responses. I appreciate your time and assistance. Now that I know that the book, "Land and People of Killaloe Parish," has references to the Garvey family, I will seek it out. Local history books tend to be great resources, and I am sure this one will be, too. Thank you again for kindly responding to my inquiry.

Hi Kurtis,
As I understand it this book is only available from Whelan's shop in Killaloe - I'm not saying this is factual just my understanding. I can send you on a copy in a week or so and the cost would be €40 (book €20, postage €14, paypal fees €3, massive travelling expenses €3). If interested you can email me at jimvaughan@eircom.net

Hi Kurtis
I apologise for not getting back to you sooner I have had some employment deadlines, which has distracted me from completing the report.
Please find attached a detailed report of the Garvey's and Quinn's of Killaloe Parish.
It appears that your Patrick Garvey and Brigid Quinn's marriage pre-dates the Killaloe Parish Marriage records and/or they were married at another Parish?
I should qualify something my research is limited to Killaloe Parish, I have been transcribing the Registers I have completed Vol 1 and 2 of 3 of Baptism and the Marriage Register.
I have found six children of the marriage:
(1) Vol 1, MF 16, Bapt: 329, Mary (1829)
(2) Vol 1, MF 21, Bapt 472, Darby (1830)
(3) Vol 1, MF 27, Bapt 1044, Sally (1832)
(4) Vol 1, MF 54, Bapt 1666, Jim (1835)
(5) Vol 1, MF 77, Bapt 2379, Michael (1837)
(6) Vol 1, MF 98 Bapt 3129, Margaret. (1840)
It appears that Patrick Garvey had another marriage to Mary Crowe , see Marriages MF 47, Rec 1097, 9th Nov 1851, note the Priest, Fr. M. Burke wrote, "in formula lexta in 2 x 5 dispensate", which indicates marital dispensation was granted (death of wife/spouse) and/or close family relative being Crowe being far enough removed.
(7) Vol 2, MF 42, Bapt 5738, Jerry, (1852)
Besides the connection between the Garvey and Quinn there is a close family connection (historic) between Conway, Crowe,
Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with your family history.
Kind Regards

Hello!
I read with interest your information regarding the Garveys in Aillemore. My G G Grandmother was Catherine Garvey b 1856 in Killaloe to Patrick Garvey and Mary Crowe. She emigrated to Sydney via the "St Lawrence" in 1878 with a cousin Bridget Garvey (parents John Garvey and Sarah Crowe). They put their native place as "Glen" Co. Clare. Catherine Garvey then paid for her sister Bridget to come out on the "Camperdown" in 1880. Address for Bridget was Glennaghlough Co. Clare, parish priest as contact - Rev McRedwood. Through research I have put this as somewhere near Garraunboy and Aillemore.
I am not sure that the Patrick Garvey mentioned above (previously married to Brigid Quinn) married Mary Crowe in 1851? Kurtis says that Patrick Garvey emigrated to USA in 1851. Through digging in the Killaloe parish records online, I have found baptisms with Patrick Garvey and Mary Crowe as parents for:
Catherine Garvey in 1856
Bridget Garvey 1860
Mary Garvey 1863 (we have family folklore of a sister Mary who emigrated and became a Nun here in Australia)
Sarah Garvey 1865
Johanna Garvey 1868
Patrick Garvey 1870
Would be interested in your thoughts....

Hi Cathy:
Afraid I cannot be of much help to you, at least right now. I can confirm that the Patrick Garvey who married Brigid Quinn immigrated on board the ship Laconic to New York City in 1851. I estimate, based on American records, that he was born about 1793-1797. He cannot be the same man who married Mary Crowe, and was having children in Ireland in the 1850's. Given his age, he is also likelier to be of an earlier generation than the man who married Mary Crowe.
Patrick and Brigid also had a son, Patrick, who was born in the 1820's. He was probably of the same generation as your ancestor, but this Patrick (Jr.) also immigrated to the United States and was killed in an accident in 1855. Also, according to my notes, he married Mary Considine. I think we can rule him out, too. Another son, John, married Ann Considine and also immigrated to the United States. However, I descend from one of Patrick and Brigid's daughters, so I do not as much information regarding their sons' families.
Given the same geographical location, it is very likely that our Garveys are related and probably first cousins. Another researcher shared information that suggested that Patrick who married Brigid Quinn was one of the younger sons in his family, and therefore had brothers who could be the father of your Patrick. Perhaps this is supported by the fact that my Garvey's immigrated, while yours stayed in Ireland - at least for another generation - suggesting he took over the farm/homestead.
It is a challenge to unravel these Garvey's since so many were named Patrick, John, Mary, Margaret, etc. But Glenalough is definitely the place of orgin for my Garveys as well, apparently, as yours. Might be interesting to see if any estate records are extant for this townland that might provide us both with more information on our presumably shared roots.

Hello Kurtis & Cathy
As you are probably aware I have published online earlier this month Jun17, the complete transcription of the Catholic Killaloe Parish Registers:
found at
http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6885
Because the size of the database and publishing limitations I have to break up the database into 5 segments.
Part of reconciliation was to expand the recorded information, while retaining the original transcription, this included, Counties and corrected Townlands.
At some point I will be also providing a statistical data analysis of the Killaloe Parish, including bloodline origins.
What I can tell you from preliminaries is that the, crime scene of the genealogical spray of bloodlines, indicates that the Killaloe Parish infact the gene stock of families came from Limerick, Tipperary and Cork (with others).
With regards in the immediate bloodlines of Quin lines came from civil Parish of Scarriff in County Derry.
and some of the Crowe lines also came from civil Parish of Scarriff in County Derry.
This may of help or hinderance, but all areas need to be investigated.
.............................................
I will check my Australia resourses to verify:
"Mary Garvey 1863 (we have family folklore of a sister Mary who emigrated and became a Nun here in Australia)"
Kind regards

Hi Kurtis and Jeff,
Thanks for the info. Naming conventions are truly frustrating aren't they!!! Especially when trying to figure out who fits with whom!
In the 1901 Census there is a Patrick (77yrs) and Mary (75 yrs) Garvey living at Aillemore with children Jeremiah (39) Garvey, Patrick (25) Garvey and Johanna (27) Garvey. I can't find a baptism for Jeremiah Garvey - he should be younger than my Catherine, but he isn't there. Other children fit the baptism records.
Thanks Jeff for your work on transcribing records. I have downloaded your spreadsheets - they are great!
I have a death cert for a Mary Garvey who died 23 Oct 1899 at Lewisham NSW (Womens and childrens hospital) nominated parents are Patrick Garvey and Mary Crow. I was hoping informant would be one of her sisters, but unfortunately it was a nursing sister at the hospital. This is on the back burner while I think how to prove or disprove kinship.
Scariff Parish in County Derry? Or Co. Clare?
When the Catholic parish records first came online, I scoured them for baptisms & marriages of my Garveys in all of the Killaloe surrounding parishes ie, Limerick, Tipperary and Clare. I didn't look at Galway - may have to rectify that...
I have also checked Griffith's Valuation, but the Garvey's in Aillemore were Jeremiah and John. Maybe one of these is Patrick's father??? The quest continues

Hello..my name is Maureen Clinton & my grandmother, Anne O'Brien's baptismal cert. from Oct. 1882, shows a Marvy Garvey as one of her sponsors. My grandmother was born in Fox & Gees, O'Callaghan's Mills parish, Killaloe diocese. Perhaps this is another place to look at records. I don't know anything else about Mary.
Good Luck!
