I live in Warwick Qld Aust. . Would you have any idea on the approx price of the book. I'm thinking do I give Whelan's shop a call.

    Hi Rae

Re: Land & People of Killaloe Parish by Sea Kierse (2008)

With regret the book is extremely hard to get, basically it is available at Whelan's at Killaloe near cathedral. The Whelan's shop as I understand it is NOT on the phone nor does it have any EFPOS/EFT facility, purely Cash only. Failing this do you know of any person that is going to Ireland, Killaloe and purchase a copy by hand, I know this seems in this day and age extremely laborious amount of time. I possibly have a cousing going to Ireland in the middle of October?

The book is it pivotal in decoding the Killaloe Parish, please I not trying to tease you or under estimate its significance. I have attached the Ryan index to give a clue. The cost of the book is about 22.00 euro if posted is about $38-$40

Is there a particular Ryan family you are following? I have been transcribing the registers if that is any help?

    Kind Regards

    Jeff

  • Hi Everyone

    KILLALOE RESOURCE BOOKS:

A little while ago I highly recommended the fablous book of Sean Kierse, Land & People of Killaloe Parish; but there are others, if you are able to get them I also recommend: A number of them are available at Whelan's at Killaloe:

    • The Killaloe Anthology by Sean Kierse published 2001 Boru Books, this is also available at Whelan at Killlaloe 14.99 euro; this book truly compliments the Land & People of Killaloe at adds to the historical context of Killaloe Parish; for example explains location of lost gravesites (particularly haunting is the childrens graveyards); Chapt 2; Christian Sites p.14 to p.34; Chapt 10: The Cholera of 1832,, p.101 to p.115; Chapt 11: The Folklore of Killaloe; Chapt 12: The Old Killaloe Fisheries; Chapt 13: Parish Bridges; Chapt 17: Sailors and Soliers Trust Houses.
    • Historic Killlaloe - A Guide to its Antiquities: by Sean Kierse published 1983. This book is details the majority of places to see while you at Killaloe it has maps, photos and a brief description of each place and its historical signifiicance. 7.50 euros from Whelan's at Killaloe.
    • The Famine Years in the Parish of Killaloe 1845-1851 by Sean Kierse published 1984: OUT OF PRINT you maybe able to see a copy at the local Killaloe Library of the National Library at Dublin or County Clare.
    • Education in the Parish of Killaloe: by Sean Kierse published 1987, detail history and explain of the school systems at Killaloe; beautifully research. Sean Kierse was a dedicated Principal at the Killaloe School. 4.50 euros form Whelan's - OTHER COMMENT: I dont know what School Records (enrollments etc) survive that are possibly housed at Killaloe or at an adjacent library, they may contain details for missing children that are not in the Killaloe Parish Baptism Records.?
    • Priests and Religious of Killaloe Parish Co. Clare by Sean Kierse published 2000, OUT OF PRINT. This lists all priest, clergy, nuns etc at Killaloe Parish; you maybe able to see a copy at the local Killaloe Library of the National Library at Dublin or County Clare.

    Kind Regards

  • Dear Rae,

I'm pleased that you received the book. It is fabulous and explains so much.. I also endorse what Jim has said about the anthology and education books, which are very interesting.

I am searching for records of Margaret O'Donnell, (Peggy? Donolan?/Donnellon?) who died some time after 1836, when my ancestor, William Crowe, was born. Margaret married Thomas Crowe. Please let me know if you find anything about her.

    Thanks

    Rob

  • Rob, I did find William Crowe, b in the Glen 1834, son of Edmond Crow & Judy Molony, also emigrated to Aust in 1855, possibly on the Hilton. His uncle had emigrated to Aust many yrs before. No Donolan, or Donnellon names mentioned . do you have any more details on the Crowe family. No mention of a Margaret O'Donnell.
