My family, the Vaughans apparently came from Kilbane in East Clare (now the Broadford Parish).  In looking up old records, it looks like the original name of the area was Killokennedy.  From what I can gather, it seems like that area is now part of Killaloe.  Can somebody please clear up my confusion?  The reason I want to know is that I keep seeing references to the book about the people of Killaloe and I was wondering if my family would be that book.  The earliest relatives I can find are Patrick Vaughan and Bridget Ryan whose son William Vaughan is my 3rd Great grandfather. I have found a baptism record in Kilbane for William around 1844 so I'm pretty sure it's him. I can't seem to find any of his siblings in that register however (Michael who went to Australia, Patrick who stayed in Ireland, Catharine and John, both of whom immigrated with William to Brooklyn NY). There may be more siblings but that is all I can document.  I believe the family is somehow related to Bishop Daniel Vaughan (Bishop of Killaloe) but I can't completely make the exact connection.

So I guess I'm really asking if the book about the people of Killaloe would be useful to me.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Dr. Karen Danielsen (nee Vaughan)

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We have a researcher who is very familiar with Killaloe and the book you reference. I will e-mail him and hopefully, he will be able to assist.

    Hi Dr Karen

We need to clarify a few things for you. There is a difference between Diocese of Killaloe and Parish of Killaloe. The Diocese translated in a modern sense means under the 'administration umbrella of' where as Parish is the specific church within the Diocese. Based on the information you supplied "Vaughans apparently came from Kilbane in East Clare [Killokennedy] (now the Broadford Parish)"

The Killokennedy/Broadford Parish which is NOT part of the Killaloe Parish, but part of the Killaloe Diocese.

I have been transcribing the Killaloe Parish Records, completed the Marriage and Vols 1 & 2 of 3 of the Baptism Register. My research has nothing to do with Broadford at this stage, suggest you try ancestory.com. There was nothing useful in the Killaloe Parish that may assist you.

Re: Fr. Daniel VAUGHAN, the following extract is now out of print, the resourse is only available at the Killaloe local township?

PRIESTS and RELIGIOUS of KILLALOE PARISH Co Clare, by Sean Kierse (2000)

    Borur Books, Killaloe, Co Clare.

    Parish Priests, p.41

"VAUGHAN, Daniel, 1827-50: He was born 1785 in Kilbane, parish of Broadford. Entered Maynooth College in 1812 and was ordained May 1815. He was curate in Tulla before being appointed parish priest of Scarriff and vicar-general of the diocese in 1818. Transferred to Killaloe in 1827. He built the new church of St Flannan on the Green. He introducted the national schools' system to the parish and was very active during the Famine years. He was transferred to Nenagh in 1850, and the following year he was appointed bishop of the diocese. He died at Summerhill, Nenagh, on 29 July 1859."

    Now for the

Land & People of Killaloe Parish, by Sean Kierse (2008)

As you previously indicated the records you seek are at possible held at Killokennedy/Broadford Parish.

However there is Vaughans listed in the book, but they resided at a different area to where you are NOT looking:

Patick VAUGHAN from the Killaloe Parish is listed on the following pages:

    p.74, 75, 76, 92, 343, 344

This Patrick VAUGHAN is part of the Kilcredaun Townland, which is relatively south of Knockaderreen and directly in the middle of the Killaloe Parish, incidentally the Broadford Parish is adjacent on the left hand side which is approximately less than 10-15 mins drive.

However reading throught the material in the book I honestly believe it places in great doubt that this Patrick VAUGHAN is yours because in the reference p.343-344, it reference to Patrick VAUGHAN in 29th April 1905, paying off is mortgage at Kilcredaun "Price to owner, £76 12s. 10d. Advance to purchaser £70 0s. 1d. Annuity £3 6s. 8d. So Patrick had a mortgage of the property. Where your Patrick VAUGHAN that you searching for left Ireland about 50yrs before.

Please advise us if you have any further questions or information that may assist other researchers.

    Hi Dr. Karen:

I may be able to add a little bit more to what Jeff has said.   There were Vaughans in the Kilbane area and specifically a Bridget Vaughan who married a Daniel Burke who was a postmaster for Broadford parish.  The Broadford parish records start in 1844 and are available online from the National Library.  Also, there are several headstone transcriptions in the Kilbane cemetery which have details about the Kilbane   Vaughans.  I will send you the links for both in a new email.  There is a local historian there who I will speak with, and a possible relation as well. If you have further details, please email them to me at: tulla@irelandxo.com.

    Hi Karen,

I saw your reference to bishop Vaughan and remembered seeing a gravestone, erected by him, in Killokennedy graveyard.

A photo is attached from which you will see that the bishops' fathers name was Edmond - it might be a useful bit of information for you.

  • Hi again Karen:

Here is the link to the photo that I was telling you about above.

    http://foto.clarelibrary.ie/fotoweb/Grid.fwx?search=00023622.jpg&archiv…...

You will note that it is under the Killokennedy Civil Parish as Kilbane and the graveyard listings are by row and number.  There are a number of Vaughan listings in Row 6.  The one that I have tried to copy for you is listed in that row.

If you have not looked through the Clare Library website, it is extremely useful to have a look through.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or anyone on this thread.

Thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

    All the best,

    Jane.
