Mary Clancy 1821 – 1908
My G G Great grandmother Mary Clancy was born in County Clare Ireland about 1821. She arrived on the ship United Kingdom in Sydney Australia as an ‘unmarried female immigrant’ age 20 under the protection of (unreadable) Clancy and her husband. The bottom of the record says she is the daughter of (unreadable) Clancy, and her mother is named as the ‘former Peggy Ryan ‘dead’. Did she come out with her uncle and aunt? Mary was from Killaloe Country Clare and her ‘calling’ was ‘housemaid’. Her health is ‘good, no problems’ and her religion as Roman Catholic.
I cannot find any records of her mother Peggy whose proper name I suppose is Margaret but she was apparently married to a Michael Clancy. I can find no records of either of them in any of the sites I have visited including the records held online by the Clare County Library. I am guessing I need to look for parish records because Peggy was born and probably died before the state began keeping records. I plan to travel to Ireland next year but I’d like to do some of the work before I get there. I understand that CLANCY is an old west Irish family and is probably anglicised from Mac Clancy and the even earlier ‘Mac Fhlannchadha brehon’ (unpronounceable to me as an Aussie). I’d dearly love to trace Peggy and until I do I can’t go any further back. I’d be grateful if someone could point me in a sensible direction. Lorese Vera, Canberra Australia 6/10/15

Lorese:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Here is the link to the parish register for Killaloe. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0793
Unfortunately, the records start in 1828. Civil registration as you indicated did not begin until 1864.

Hi Lorese:
I saw your post and thought that I would add that it may be worth your while to try to find the townlands in Killaloe through the Clare County Library website that have both Ryans and Clancys in them. Also, be sure to include the variant Clanchy. It is possible as well that Mary Clancy's parents were sponsors for other family member's children born from 1828 onwards. It is worth your while to look through the NLI parish registers for Killaloe for that purpose. I know that it may be a longshot, but it could give you new clues.
If you need any further assistance or have any questions, please let me know.
Kind regards,
Jane.

Hi Jane, and Jeff
It seems I am able to respond to you both now ... I had trouble with the site and had given up. Sorry its been so long. I'd appreciate any help because I have spent 100's of hours trolling through records looking for my ancestors and they seem nowhere to be found.
Hi Jane, What did sponsoring mean? It seems to be that as sponsors were recorded at baptisms so they were what we otherwise know as 'God parents'?
Jeff, I am still desperately searching and wondering if there is something really obvious I am missing such as different verions of names. There are quite a few Mary Clancy's but none of them are mine, I've tried Maria and so on too. I bought Mary's death cert the other day hoping there might be clearer info than that on her Immigration Record but the only thing recorded is fathers surname as CLANCY, first name unknown, mothers name unknown. Mary must never have spoken about her paretns during her lifetime in Australia. Lorese

Hi Lorese,
Very interesting entry by yourself. I have 3 Clancy sisters coming to Australia later in time from Killaloe, County Clare. Bridget first and then Margaret (28) & Sarah (22) together in 1883. Margaret is my GG Grand Mother. This town is quite small so I assume Clancy a well known name. Again they were sponsored out here.
My email is gdonnan12@gmail.com. I have been unable to go back further than this yet as I only have come into possession of the immigration / shipping records recently to prove the Killaloe connection. County Clare has been passed down in family folklore......."the lights of County Clare."

Hi Lorese,
I don't know if this would be any connection - I have a Catherine Barton married to Patt Clancy in Killaloe Parish Feb 1841. Children baptized: John in 1841, James in 1843, and Bridget in 1846. I was told Catherine Barton was sister to my John Barton.

Hello Bevlittig,
Was Bridget, John and James from / living in Crossderry as children? We understand parish records were kept at Killaloe as regional centre.
As these three children are born before 1855 I am trying to see if they are our relations. We know there were three sisters who came to Australia - Bridget, Margaret, Sarah. Bridget was the oldest.
Thank you

Hello Gerard,
John was born between 1815-1822 (both dates on records) do not know were he was born.He married Katherine Reeves in 1843 in Killaloe-Knockyclovoun (?) Clare. He was a shoemaker. Son James was born 29 October 1844. They emigrated to United States in 1847. I do not have any information on John's siblings. Sorry, wish I had more informaton.

Hello Gerard and Bev
I've already replied to Gerard via email but will add a bit ... so Gerard, its interesting that you say that Killaloe was the regional centre for records as I am going there later this year. Where did you hear that by the way? I am hoping that the Clare library holds the records I am after on microfiche because they are certainly not online. Even though my Mary Clancy gave Killaloe as her place of abode on her emmigration records to Australia in 1841 and also named her parents on the papers (Micheal Clancy and Peggy Ryan) I can't find any record of her birth or baptism. I did find a possible marriage record for her parents in another county and I am thinking that perhaps her father went up there to marry her mother then brought her back to Killaloe where (hopefully) Mary was born and recorded and I'll find her. Mary came to Australia with her uncle John Clancy and his wife Bridget, they also had a daughter Mary Clancy. With all the repeating of names over the generations it sure makes finding people difficult - or rather, its so easy to mistake one Mary Margaret John or Micheal for another!
Bev I am sure your Clancy's were relatives of mine but I've not seen that connection yet - they are probably not direct, possibly cousins aunts and uncles.
