Hello,

I've traced my ancestor to Kilbane, William J. Vaughan.  Patrick Nolan Vaughan Jr (or the small), his brother, was on the 1901 and the 1911 censuses and he and his father (Patrick Vaughan, the big) were on the Tithe Appotment books for the area. I'm now looking to figure out which churches they belonged to so I may find Birth, Marriage and Death Records for the earlier family.  William emigrated to Brooklyn New York with his sister Catharine and brother John in 1865.  Another brother (the only other sibling I know of) Michael emigrated to Sydney Australia with his cousin Patrick from Killaloe in 1866.

I am particularly interested in finding out information about their mother Winifred Nolan.  I can't seem to find any reference to her other than the death certificate for William when he died in 1912 in Broooklyn NY.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Karen,

Kilbane is in the RC parish of Broadford. Their baptism and marriage records start in 1844. There?s a copy in the National Library in Dublin and LDS have also microfilmed them. They don?t appear to be on-line anywhere yet.

  • Elwyn,

Thanks for the fast response.  I think I'll have to try the LDS since I'm not going to be in Dublin anytime soon being here in Las Vegas NV. LOL

    Again, thanks for the help.

  • Hi Dr Karen

Not sure if it helps but www.rootsireland.ie/ has some Vaughan birth/baptism records in Clare - the earliest is 1851

  • Hi Col

I'm aware of the site but unfortunately it doesn't have the Broadford area churches listed as one of the sources. :(

    Thanks for your help

  • Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if there were any assisted emigration schemes in the Broadford Parish. I know that Michael Vaughan, the brother of my great great grandfather William Vaughan emigrated to Sydney Australia sometime in the 1860s. I was wondering if records related to a emigration scheme in the Broadford/Kilbane area exist.

    Thanks,

    Karen Danielsen, nee Vaughan

  • I'm also searching the Kilbane records regarding the Hogan and Scully families in the same period and having little success. Can anyone tell me, please, whether the records for  baptisms and marriages in Kilbane in the RC parish of Broadford prior to 1844 were not kept,  were lost or were recorded in another parish please? I'm exhausting places to look for any mention of them.

    Thanks!

  • Have you looked at the parishes that are in the Diocese of Killaloe?  These maps are at NLI website where the R.C. church records can be found.

You might also take a look at the townlands within the civil parish of Killaloe.  This website might help.  https://www.townlands.ie

  • Barred_Bandicoot,

According to this site, there are no RC records for Broadford before 1844.

    https://www.johngrenham.com/records/rc_church.php?county=Clare&parish=Broadford&churchid=767

That’s not untypical for rural Ireland. There are parishes with records back to the early 1700s, notably in Dublin and Wexford, but in many rural areas it was the 1820s or later before they started keeping records. Taking the adjacent parishes to Broadford, O’Callaghans Mills records start in 1835, Doonass 1851, & Kilaloe 1828. In some particular cases earlier records may have been lost but in general they just weren’t keeping any records prior to the start dates you can see on the website.
