I would love to hear from anyone with information on the Kearney families in Cloontabonniv.  Our great, great grandfather Michael Kearney born abt. 1836 to Michael Kearney and Bridget Hegarty migrated to Queensland, Australia in 1865.  Most of his records in Queensland note that he was from Kilmaley but one of his children's birth certificates narrows it down for me and actually notes that he is from Cloontabonniv.  I notice from the Griffiths valuations that there were a couple of Michael Kearney's as well as a Bridget Kearney (possibly his mother) in Cloontabonniv at that time.  I am getting quite confused as there were another Michael, Thomas and James Kearney who also arrived in Queensland about the same time and went to the same district in Queensland .  I suspect they may have been cousins.  Our Michael Kearney married in Towoomba, Queensland in 1868 a Mary Scallane who also came from Clare (Milton Malbay) and was the daughter of Nichollas Scallane (a fisherman)  and Mary Conserdine who (on the Griffith's valuation) were shown as living in Quilty. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  • Josie:

Check the 1901 and 1911 censuses. www.census.nationalarchives.ie. There were six Kearney families in Cloontabonniv in 1901. One family has an older son named Michael. Note: the townland was incorrectly spelled Cloontabonnir in the 1901 census.

  • I have just found this site. Do you have any information on Bridget Kearney or Carney. She is my great grandmother and a sister to Michael Kearney or Carney. So we are related! My information is she was born in 1838 in Kilmaley. Her father Michael Kearney or Carney and mother Bridget Hagarty or Hegarty. She arrived in Melbourne 1862. I have a large portion of her history but little of her brothers Michael and John and their Queensland lives. Are you able to contact me directly by email.
