Hello. I've been looking for close relatives of my great-great grandfather, Patrick Grady, who lived in Ballingaddy East from about 1866 until at least 1881, probably 1891 when he left with his family for America. Patrick was married to Kate Quin and  lived in Ballagh, Kilfenora, immediately after his marriage. I know that he had younger brothers, and wonder whether Michael Grady, a resident of Lissatunna in Griffith's, might have been one. I'm also looking for Patrick's father, James O'Grady. There are several people by that name in the area but I can't tie any of them to Patrick.

It's also been passed down through our family that James was murdered in his garden after Sunday Mass. This might have happened in Ballingaddy East, although the story says Lisdoonvarna. I haven't found any evidence in either place, but I mention it on the off chance that someone might have heard such a story.

thanks for any leads!

Ellen

  • Ellen,

From some research I had done at Corofin, Michael O'Grady who was at Lissatunna, was married to Margaret Slattery, who it is believed, was a sister of my Great, Great Grandfather, Austin Slattery.

Baptismal records show Michael & Margaret having 8 children between 1835 and 1852.  Unfortunately there were no clues to who Michael's parents were, or where they came from.

    Best wishes,

    Terry Slattery

  • Terry,

Thanks very much for that. In the meantime, I found Michael in Lissatunna in the Tithe Applotment books, and your information confirms that he would have been much older than Patrick, who was born around 1835. If they were related, they were of different generations. I continue to dig, having found a number of possible Grady cousins in the US and Australia through DNA.

If I find anything new I'll post it here.

    Best wishes

  • Dear Ellen:

Have you checked the Kilmanaheen civil parish page on the Clare Library website?  There might be some useful information there for you.

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/kilmanaheen.htm

The Lissatunna townland references are here:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/townlands/lissatunna.htm

With regard to the oral history in your family of the possible murder, you might take a look at the Schools Folklore Collection at this link:

    https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/CL?p=1&o=Vol

You may find some reference to James Grady in the Ennistymon Schools collection.

You might also consider contacting the Local Studies Centre in Ennis.  Their archivists and senior librarians there are excellent resources on Clare local history.  The website and email can be found at this link:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/library/local-studies/locstudi1.htm

Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

    All the best,

  • Dear Jane,

Thank you so much for those references. I have spent many hours on the Clare Library site. It's very rich resource, and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in Clare history and genealogy.

The school collection is wonderful. I've seen some of these for part of Cork, but I didn't realize there was a national collection. What a treasure.

I will write to the people in Ennis.

    With best wishes,

    Ellen

  • Dear Ellen:

I'm glad to hear that you are aware of the library site and it is worth checking back every now and again as they are always being updated.

I will certainly mention to the Local Studies Centre about your search.  If you would like to meet me (if you find yourself in Ireland), please let me know and I will meet you there.

All the best, and please let us know how your search progresses!

  • Thank you, Jane. I have gotten so deep into this that I am going to need to plan a long visit. I've just retired and have a few long-deferred projects going, but perhaps some time next year. I will keep your kind offer in mind.
