Looking for info on Catherine RUSSELL (b. ca 1803) from Kilkee, Kilrush, Clare and her siblings John, Eomond/Eamon and Mary. There's thought to have been a Sinon/Senan name passed down through the family.

Catherine RUSSELL married Thomas CURRY (possibly CURRIE, b. ca 1801, possibly Lisluinaghan, Kilfearagh) around 1820. Their children were James, John, Francis, Patrick (b. 17 March 1837 in Ireland, d. 7 December 1919 in Ontario, Canada), Mary Ann, Sinon/Senan and Michael. There may have been others. Catherine and Thomas are believed to have left Ireland in 1848 for Canada, leaving some of their older children behind.

John RUSSELL may have had some connection to Col George WYNDHAM, 1st Baron Leconfield and may have emigrated to Canada with a group of Wyndham tenants from Clare. I have been unable to confirm this, although the information is purported to have come from correspondence between John and one or another of his siblings, most likely Eomond/Eamon.

Any information would be deeply appreciated.

The RC church records for Kilkee do not begin until 1869. I did look at the 1828 Tithe listings for Kilfearagh parish (spelled Kilferagh in the Tithes) and found a number of Russell and Curry records. Lisluinanagh townland is very prominent. www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

I also have links to the 1855 Griffiths for Kilfearagh and Kilrush parishes.

  • Thank you Roger. I think I can safely rule out Mathias CURRY as this name has never appeared in either of my CURRY branches since. However, there are many Charles' and Johns. James RUSSELL in Duagh (tithe applotment) may be worth following up. It's a rough go trying to find specific CURRYs as most of the Canadian records simply list Ireland as birthplace and the same handful of names recur in each generation - John, Thomas, Charles, Francis, Patrick, Michael and James for males and Catherine, Mary(Ann or Ellen), Bridget, Teresa and Elizabeth for females.

  • Roger left out the important word "microfilmed" in "The _microfilmed_ RC church records for Kilkee do not begin until 1869". The original records survive in the parish back to 1837. They include the last four children of Thomas Corry and Catherine Russel: Patrick baptised May 1837, Michael baptised 14 Jul 1839, Thomas jr. baptised 30 Aug 1840 and Mary baptised Nov 1845.

There is a large archive of Wyndham/Leconfield estate papers at Petworth House in England where you should find more information.

  • Paddy:

Thanks for the clarification. I was relying on Brian Mitchell's reference book. I assume when the NLI puts the parish registers online the records for Kilkee will only go back to 1869. How do we get the other 32 years online?

  • Thank you so much Paddy! This information is very helpful and proves that I'm on the right trail. My cousin is going to be so irked - she hates being wrong.

Paddy, are there any burial records for this family in the archive you used for the baptism data? The source for my original info suggested that there were at least two of Thomas and Catherine's children that died prior to their emigration. Thanks again, in advance.
