Hi, My Great Great Grandmothers name was Ellen Madigan. My maths isnt great but I think she would have been born between 13th Jan and 11th Sept 1853 as her 1st Australian marriage cert shows she is 21yo on the 11th Sept 1873.She married a Patrick Gallagher from Donegal. She was widowed and her 2nd Australian marriage cert gives her age as 31yo on the 13th Jan 1885. She gave her birthplace as County Clare. My Mothers Aunt Pat always said the family came from kilrush. Ellen Madigans marriage certificate also names her parents as Patrick Madigan (Boatman) and Bridget Scanlon. I had a look on this site at the "Griffiths Valuation of Ireland - Kilrush, County Clare" and was excited to see there was a Patrick Madigan and Bridget Scanlon on Pound Street. Is there anyway to find out if these people were a couple and if they had a daughter named Ellen? Also (now this part might be a bit of a stretch) I noticed a Patrick Madigan and Ellen Madigan on Henry Street. I know its a bit of a stretch but is there anyway to find out if the Henry street Patrick and Ellen Madigan are the parents of the Pound Street Patrick Madigan. I was just thinking it would make sense that he was named after his Father and named his Daughter after his Mother. Im not sure when or how she came to Australia just that she was here before 11th Sept 1873. Hope someone can help. Thanks Cam Carter.

  • Here is the family you are looking for:-

Patrick Madigan/Bridget Scanlan had the following children baptised in Kilrush

    Martin 3 Nov 1842

    Arthur 23 June 1845

    Patrick 28 Jan 1848

    Bridget 26 Aug 1849

    Ellen 2 Dec 1851

    Patrick 9 June 1854

    Catherine 10 Aug 1857

    Mary 29 June 1860

    Michael 2 Mar 1863

You will notice that there are 2 Patrick's, well the first one died in infancy and it was tradition to name the next one after the first, The people back then in Ireland believing that God would not take another of the same name.

You can hire a microfilm of the Kilrush Parish Registers from you nearest Family History Research centre, film no.979696 which will confirm the above information. It should also tell you who the sponsors of the children were at baptism as well as where they lived in Kilrush. Hope this helps.

  • Hi there

I'm looking for details of my G-G-G-Grandmother Catherine Scanlon (or Scanlan) who emigrated to Australia in 1848 when she was around 22 with her sister Bridget who was 19. So they were born around 1826 and 1829 in Kilrush, Co. Clare. I have no details of their parents, but when they left on the ship for Australia they were living in Pallaskenny where Catherine was a house maid and her sister was a nursemaid. I would appreciate any help you can give me in tracking down their history in Ireland.

    Thanks

  • The Kilrush Parish records begin in 1827. The nearest Scanlan family that comes close to your query would bt the family of Michael Scanlan & Catherine Murphy who had the following children baptised in Kilrush, Bridget 16/4/1828, Patrick 25/1/1830, Martin 3/11/1831, John 1/2/1834, Mary 4/5/1836, Michael 7/12/1838. Since the mother is Catherine it's possible that your Catherine born in 1826 before the records began is also a child of this family. If you find either a marriage or death record in Australia it may show who her parents were. Hope this helps.

  • Thanks so much for that information! Now just to throw a (good) spanner in the works I have tracked down a cousin who has done a lot more research than me and my details about my GGG Grandma coming to Australia with a sister are wrong. She was born around 1829-31 in Kilrush, County Clare and came to Melbourne Australia as an Irish Famine Orphan who came on the "Pemberton" 14 May 1949 aged 18. The only detail he has been able to find about her parents was on her death certificate where her father's occupation was listed as 'fisherman'. Any assistance greatly appreciated!

  • My GG Grandmother was a Bridget Scanlan also born in Kilrush between 1823 & 1825.  She married a William Hickey born 7 Apr 1821 in Whitegate, Cork and I think he was in the Navy at that time. They moved to Alnmouth but I suspect they had at least one child (Mary) born in Ireland and the rest born in England.

Their daughter Louisa Hickey (Lucy) migrated to Australia and married a seaman Herbert Shepherdson originally from Hull.

My question is, was Bridget Scanlan (Scanlon) a common name in the early 1800's in Kilrush?

I have no further details of my Bridget (birthplace, siblings, marriage or parents).
