Hi
I'm descended from James O'Flanagan (1867-1936) son of James O'Flanagan (1842-1902) and Ellen McDonnell (1844-1915). James and his brother Timothy emigrated to Chicago in the 1880s or early 1890s I believe. They had an older brother John and a younger sister Ellen who both appear to have died in 1993, and 2 surviving siblings, Martin (1872-?) and Mary O'Flanagan (1874-?). I'm wondering if there are any cousins in the area descended from Martin or Mary.
Additional information: James Flanagan senior is the son of Martin O'Flanagan, his wife Ellen is the daughter of John McDonnell according to their 1865 marriage record. The townland in Kilrush may be Ballyurra or Ballyerra. Different documents list Mary as either McDonnell (most likely) or McDonald.
Hope to hear from someone.

Hi Michael , I don't know if I'm on the right track here , maybe you can help to give whatever details you have on the Flanagan family from Kilrush Co. Clare ...my trace is a Mary M. Flanagan ...I don't have any information on her only her marriage to a Harold George Frogley at Kingston , Surrey ,England U.K. (WITHIN THE LAST QUARTER OF 1928)....they had a daughter of the name Dora Evelyn ...if that would help ...Dora possibly from her mother's side ......Evelyn named after her father's side .
any data on the family name Flanagan's in Kilrush or how I would obtain some links ...would help .
thank You
Gwyn Hughes .

Hi Gwyn
I'm afraid I don't really know anything more about my branch than what I've posted here already. I know that my great grandfather had a sister Mary who stayed in Ireland (at least at the time when he had left) but whatever became of her i do not know. There was a brother, Martin as well.
I can tell you that there were a lot of Flanagans and O'Flanagans in Kilrush, so the looking won't be easy.
You might try the online site of the Clare public library. I found some cemetery records there and other odds and ends.
And of course the Church of the Latter Day Saints has a lot of Clare records online. I've found that site to be very helpful.
Good luck!

I just realized I made a typo in my original post. I suppose most readers will have figured out that John and Ellen Flanagan both died in 1893, not 1993, but I like to be thorough.

Hi
I am Joanne Farrell, currently living in Ballyerra House with my family. We are tracing the history of the house and have gone back as far as 1866 when James O Flanagans son was born. Does anyone know who built the house or when the Flanagans arrived here.
Goodluck with your search

Gwyn,
I'm also descendant from McDonnells in Kilrush, but from Moyne. There seems to be a large family from the area, so perhaps your ancestor is a McDonnell.
There's John and Bridget McDonnell living in town in 1901 that would be old enough to be Ellen's parents - a potential lead: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

Hi Michael,
I have just tried to send you a message and I'm not sure if I succeeded - technology and me don't make a great pairing!
My late mother was born and reared an O'Flanagan in Ballyurra. She was one of nine children, one of whom is still living and there are up to five generations extending from there to many corners of the world. You may well know some of them.
I would very much welcome hearing from you.
Best wishes

I can't help with finding cousins, but if you're not previously aware, the Kilrush parish registry has an Ellen McDonnell born 9 Feb 1849 to a John McDonnell and Mary Lucas.
Another Ellen McDonnell was born 31 Dec 1936 to a John McDonnell and Margaret Higgins.

Hi everyone - I'm a little late to the conversation here, but here goes. My great grandfather was John Flanagan from Tullycrine (says this on his marriage record) who was married to Mary Waters - also from Tullycrine. They were married in 1873. Shortly afterwards, it appears that they emigrated to USA - to Brooklyn NY where my grandfather William was born (August 1877), another son Matthew (July 17, 1880) and a daughter Mary (a few years after Matthew according to USA census records, but no definite DOB). From DNA testing, I do match up to William Waters and Mary Fennell and they had a daughter Mary so I'm figuring William and Mary were my great grandparents. William and Mary also had a son named Denis who had many children by two wives, both named Mary. Many of Denis's children emigrated to New Jersey/New York and at one point William, Matthew, and Mary Flanagan were living with William, Michael, and Patrick Waters. I know nothing about my Flanagan family though...and in reading these posts I see that there were many Flanagans in Kilrush area so I guess this won't be easy. ~ Kathleen Flanagan
