Hi, Recently another researcher stated that County Clare is/was a port area and a springboard for ships saling to America back in 1839. So perhaps, even though my ancestor stated he emigrated from County Clare at age 17, he may not have actually lived or was from County Clare. Any thoughts on this theory?

The shipping logs to Australia I believe say where they were actually born, maybe the same logs existed for America as they were filled out before they left. They most likely used the same books.

Hi,
I'm not saying the researcher you refer to is wrong but I have never heard of or seen records of ships leaving from Co. Clare for America. Maybe you should provide your ancestor details and the volunteers might be able to assist.

G'day
My ancestor from County Clare Ellen Power left from Dublin in 1834/35 to go to Sydney Australia by ship Duchess of Northumberland .

I have just recently discovered that our Curtis line is in fact dal g cais through FTdna testing. We have some overlap with Eagans in our match list. Nothing within historic times unfortunately, but from that I've become convinced that Eagans too had Munster origins. Is that what you believe? And the counties surroundiing Clare are the most likely if they moved on a bit. Our problem - nowhere in Ireland do our ancestors show in records. Our US census documentation goes from 1860 till 1892, with arrival assumed prior to 1852 when their first US child was born. They may have been helped by families from the community who'd previously settled in Jersey City, New Jersey although I can't trace exactly whom. But that's where their first daughter was born and where she moved with her family after her parents' death. And she married a Mannion, which I didn't even know was an Irish name, but also appears to be from Clare. Not knowing is really frustrating! Hope you have more luck. Jude Curtis Levine

I WISH ship records from Ireland to NYC had any information! The earlier years had nothing of significance. Not even sure they put families together when they scribbled the names onto the one form they used.
HEARD my O'dea and Houlihan family members MIGHT have been from Clare.........b. 1826........immigrated to NYC......but have no information (yet) about them prior to a NYC census in 1870. Pretty sure records will show up and be transcribed in my lifetime!
Happy Hunting!

Hi m eagan:
Thank you for your query.
There actually were some ships that went from County Clare, and where they sailed from was Kilrush. There were also ships that sailed from Kilrush for Limerick and then passengers sailed from Limerick.
The Clare Library has some interesting information about this:
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/fam_his/sca…
You can view some of them at this link:
http://members.tripod.com/~Data_Mate/irish/Irish.htm
There used to be a very good website with a number of transcribed ships lists, but I don't see it listed any longer. Another member might elaborate on this.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
All the best,
Jane

Thanks for this, Bill. I know Eric well and his article is very informative for the Clare port. It was located at Clarecastle and sailed out of the Shannon Estuary. You will note that he also includes the port of Limerick as a disembarking port.
M. Eagan: If you would like further information about this, I will contact Eric and you can contact me at: jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com

Hi, Jane,
Perhaps you meant https://www.immigrantships.net/, which is The Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG)? This website allows you to search a word or name (on the left side of the main page). I plugged in Kilrush and got 10 hits. However, not a one was in reference to Kilrush being the port of embarkation or disembarkation. Same with Clarecastle (also tried Clare Castle for good measure), and had no hits. This site is STILL a very good one, as some of those 10 hits with Kilrush mentioned were correspondence related to the shipping industry in one way or another.
All the best,

Thanks Jeanne. However, there was a site with a number of ports including Clare. Unfortunately, I can't find it and it may be no longer availalbe. Thanks for your input on this. If M.Eagan needs any further information, please let me know,
All the best,
Jane
