Please let me know if anyone has information on my great grandfather Patrick Joseph Martin or how I my can find information. My siter will bevisiting Ireland this summer and will be looking for inforamation on our ancestors.
Patrick Joseph Martin was born in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland March 7 1857. (alternate in states he was born in Mt. Mellie, Queen County Ireland) son of Michael Martin and Margaret Ryan-Martin.
In 1873 he immigrated to New York USA at age 16. (Alternate info moved to New York 1876 age 19)
In June of 1883 married Susanna Cecelia Welch in Hutchinson Kansas.
1884 their first child was born, Philip Patrick Martin.
1885 Moved to Hutchinson Kansas where he owned and operated Martins's Dry Goods Store. Sold store Joined by Nicholas
Additional children Joseph -1896, Cecelia Agnes (Ruplinger) - 1898, Margret Mary 1900, Paul John -1903, Alice Therese (Peters)-1905, Patricia Susanna (Wearne) -1910, Richard -1912.
1905 Moved to San Diego, CA where he built family home at 2496 E. Street in San Diego which is now a Historical House.
Known as a builder, capitalist, philanthropist and civic leader Patrick built and operated 3 Hotels the Virginia, Martin and Marquette. One of which was a 3 story general store and hotel located on the N/E corner of 8th and F Stin downtown San Diego.He also served as Director of Southern Trust & Commerce Bank.
Patrick was instrumental in establishing Nazareth House Orphanage in Mission Valley, St. Augustine High School for Boys and a wing at Mercy Hospital.
In 1908 Patrick was a founding member of The Knights of Columbus of which he served as its first Grand Knight. As well as an Elks Club member, Ancient Order of Hiberians, Draft Board and Young Men's Institute.
He served with Samuel Fox, George Marston, Kate Sessions and John Spreckles on the Park Commission from 1907-1915 and was instrumental in getting Balboa Park ready for the Panama California Exposition.
1919 became a Naturlized American Citizen
Died at age 69 ...Dec 8, 1925 after long stomach illness.

According to www.ennisparish.com/genealogy there were no children born in Ennis parish with the Martin surname. There were 3 baptisms where the mother's surname was Martin. If he does not show up in County Offaly the parishes adjoining Ennis/Drumcliffe might be worth searching.
