Our family research is centered on John Eagan born by our records June 24, 1822. Per his story he migrated to the US at age 17. We have found 1 ship list that included a John Eagan age 17, Jane Eagan 13, John Eagan 11. On the list is also a Kiernan Eagan age 25. Kiernan and John are listed as Laborers. This ship list is dated May 23, 1839; he may have just stated he was 17 (he would have been 17 the next month) or the year of birth is incorrect; however he died at age 91 in October 1913. Unfortunately we have no information on any family for our John Eagan -- siblings, parents, uncles etc.. no family stories were handed down that anyone recorded or passed along. No idea where in Co Clare he was from. We first find him up in 1850 in Ohio.
We are stumped as to how to proceed from here. Are there records of immigrants to the US at that time period? Were there ship records at ports (London)? Any suggestions would be greatly helpful. Thanks so much.

Hi:
There are a number of sites that you can look at:
1. Castlegarden.org is a passenger list database that pre-dates Ellis Island. You can try that to see if you ca find your John Eagen (Egan).
2. You can also log onto the www.clarecountylibrary.ie/genealogy website. This website is extremely useful for anyone with County Clare ancestry. You can check through the Tithe Applotment Books by surname. They can determine where the Eagen (Egan) surname was prevalent in the County. Not only that, you can have a look through donated records and other records that have been transcribed voluntarily. It is a great site to start with.
3. There is also a website of Transcriptions for Irish Ship Records--I can't recall the name exactly but it is something like Irish Transcriber's Ships Guild. If you google it, you should get it.
The best of luck with your research.
Kind regards,
Jane.

I have two County Clare brothers named Michael Eagin and John Eagin. They list their parents are Martin Eagin and Margeret Reilly Eagin. Micheal may have been in Massachusetts first as he married a woman from there. He then settled in Hubbard, Ohio area and later Portland, Oregon. John settled in Eastern Pennsylvania, then went to Hubbard for awhile and finally came back to Pennsylvania settling in Jefferson County. John was born in 1844 and Michael approximately 1847. I believe they emigrated in their late teens or early twenties. John was said to have left Ireland to avoid fighting in the Irish army. I don't know where in Clare they came from. I was thinking with the variation of the name Eagin, there might be a connection.
