Hi Roger McDonnell,

thankyou for your advice and website information.

I have searched the Tithe Applotment records and narrowed my search to Rahona East and West Townlanld locations, for my ancestor's place of origin.

This has been the general area of my search and has been confirmed through an advetisement he( Denis) placed in  the local paper( 1857) requesting information from or about his family in Carrigaholt.

As a longshot I was wondering if any descendants may have withn their family " yarns" any information of the family's eventual whereabouts.

His father was a Denis a brother Andrew and a grandfather Michael.

Thanks again for your reply and help

best wishes,

Jane nee McMahon

I responded to your earlier note and it looks like you found the second Dennis McMahon in the Tithes from Rahona West.

I can't help you with local yarns about the family since I live in the USA. However, I did find information in the 1901 and 1911 censuses which may be important. There was an Andrew Collins family (wife Kate) who lived in Rahona West. Kate's parents Michael and Honor McMahon were living with the Collins. Based on Michael's age, I'm wondering if Michael was a brother to Dennis? Michael died between 1901 and 1911. Honor was still with the Collins in 1911. I will look for a death record.

There were four Michael McMahon civil death index records between 1901 and 1911 in the Kilrush registration district. ( I can provide the Volume and page number if you are interested).

    born 1816  died 1902

    born 1824  died 1904

    born 1828 died  1904

    born 1822  died  1906

There was only one Honor McMahon record that fit her age (see below).

You can get copies of death records from the General Register Office for four euros per record.

Just so you know, the death records show the date, location, cause of death and the name of the informant and sometimes the relationship of the informant to the deceased.

    First Name Honor
    Last Name McMahon
    Year 1917
    Year Of Death 1917
    Registered Quarter/Year Oct - Dec 1917
    Age 81
    Year Of Birth 1836
    Registration District Kilrush

  • Hi Jane

    The transcribers at

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/tithe_applot/moyarta…

thought that the difficult word after the name of Denis McMahon in Bellagh was "Smith" (i.e. blacksmith).

Your own family records bring you back a lot further than most people could hope to go from the records surviving in Ireland for the parish.

There are still descendants in the parish of the family that you have been looking at in the 1901 census.

    Best wishes
