  • Dear Marg:

Thanks for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.  The Scariff parish records are online through the Clare Library website under the Family & Genealogy Section thanks to Jim McNamara.  If you look at thatpage, you will see a line item for Baptisms, Marriages & Deaths and clicking on that, will bring you to a list of parishes.  Jim has done a great job transcribing them.  I believe that they start from 1860 (but I may be wrong on that date).  It is worth going through them, and please get back to me.  As to O'Callaghan's Mills, I believe that there may be something online for them, but I will have to double-check that for you.  Leave that with me for a few days and I will get back to you.

You can message me at tulla@irelandxo.com.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi Margaret,

I checked the Scariff/Moynoe RC Baptismal and Marriage Registers (1852-1881) for the name DRONEY-DROONEY and found none.  If they lived in O'Callaghan Mills, then they should be in that register, other than the marriage which is nearly always in the woman's parish regardless of where the couple will live next.

I next checked for the parish intersection for households of both surnames of Ryan-Droney (during Griffiths Valuation - 1855) and found:

                                           [number of households]

    County    Parish                   Droney    Ryan

    Clare       Killuran                   3             1

    Clare       Kilmacrehy             1              1

    Clare       Kilmuray(Ibrickan)    3             3

    Clare       Rath                       8              1

    Limerick  Fedamore               3             12

    Tipperary Templederry            1             72

In one respect you are lucky that Droney-Drooney is a rare name and that will make research both easier with less false leads but harder as you will look in many more places with no finds of that surname.

Here is what the MacLysaght's The Surnames of Ireland has to say about DRONEY:

    (O) Droney, Drooney  ? Dr?na. This name, well known in east Clare, is rarely found elsewhere.

I have also transcribed the complete Feakle RC registers, and don't remember seeing that surname there.  I have yet to publish the Scariff/Moynoe Baptisms as I have about a year or so to complete.

Do you have knowledge of the names of any children of this couple (born in Ireland?).  Unfortunately, the Marriage, Birth, Death Index for the civil records of Ireland does not begin until 1864 so none of your family of interest should be in these.  However, if you check for any DRONEY-DROONEY records there, you may find siblings and by chance find their point of origin.

    All the best,
    James McNamara
