Seeking information about Matthew and Mary Dinan (both born ca. 1798) and Dennis and Margaret Dinan (also born 1790s), who emigrated to Detroit, Michigan, USA in 1849. And, of course, their children.

D. Dinan:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I looked at the 1826 Tithe Applotment list and found two Dinan records in the parish but the names were not Matthew or Dennis. See link below. Here is the link to the Tomgrany/Kilnoe RC parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0764 Records start in November 1832. There is a new data base of the RC parish registers which are available on subscription sites Find My Past and Ancestry. I located an 1834 Kate Dina baptism with parents Denis Dinan and Margaret Tuohy and also found an 1836 baptismal record for a Mary Dinan with parents Mat Dinan and Mary Canny. I would suggest that you search the parish register and see if you can locate other baptismal records.

I spotted the Dinan name and while this does not seem directly connected to my family I still may have a relationship. My g-g-g-grandfather was named Patrick Dinan. I only found this out in the last year by chance searching records. It seems shameful but little was passed down in this family about their lore. Patrick Dinan and his future wife, Ann Myers, were both born in 1802. They left for America in 1837. Their children would have been born in Ireland and they were recorded as arriving in New York. John Dinan was about 6, born in 1831. His sister, Mary, was born in 1829. I would hope that the marriage between Patrick and Ann was recorded somewhere, as perhaps were the births of Mary and John. I thought tht they might have been from Kerry but no record exists so maybe my mother or grandmother were confused. But records exist for a Patrick Dinan in Clare before he would have emigrated. In the Ireland Tithe Appointment books1814-1855 there were 4 entries with a Patrick Dinan being recorded. First was in 1820, with townland being Kilmanaheen, parish-Lahensy. Second entry recorded in 1824 with townland being Glenymullone and Parish was Killaloe. Next entry was in 1826 Tulla townand and Moymore parish. Last was in 1827 for Moyarta townland and Dunaha East parish. All were Clare County. I have no idea if any of these were "my" Patrick Dinan but suppposing the any or all are possibilities. I found this somehow on the LDS site. It was there that I found the family arriving in New York. I had no idea about Patrick and Ann then and had entered John Dinan since I knew that my grandma's grandma, Deborah Dinan, was born in Patterson New Jersy in 1849 and that John was her father. I entered his name in their records about arrivals and found he had come with his parents and sister as a little kid. So, now I am interested in confirming their origins in Ireland but pickings have been scarce. I am not really even positive about them originating in County Clare although there seems the possibility especially with a Patrick Dinan being in the tithe records. John and family wound up in Chicago and this was documented more easily in Cook County records.

Dear ddinan:
Thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.
There was a Dennis Dinan whose wife was Margaret Griffin/Griffy and they resided in the parish of Quin. They had the following children:
1. Charles baptised 21 May 1837. Sponsors were John Harrison and Bridget Whealon. Residence was Knockanoura.
2. John baptised May 1834. Sponsors were: Pat Harrison and (illegible) Houlihan. Residence was not listed.
3. Bridget baptised 27 August 1831. Sponsor was Nancy Meany. Residence was Knockanoura.
4. Margaret baptised 12 December 1840. Sponsor was Catherine Griffy. Residence was not listed.
If any of the above sound like they are a match to your family, the parish that you would be interested in is Quin.
I could not find a Matthew Dinan listed. The Dinan families appeared to reside in the parishes of Kilnoe, Quin, Tulla, Feakle (Caher) and Feakle (Lower). Many of these registers are online through the National Library of Ireland.
In addition, the Clare Library is uploading many of these registers which have been transcribed on the Clare Past Forum and which will be available very soon on the Clare Library Website.

If you need further assistance, please let me know. You can also create an Ancestor Profile for your Dinan ancestors on the XO Chronicles feature which is located at the top of this page.
You might also note that many times, Dinan was also spelled as "Dynan". There are a number of headstones in the Tulla graveyard with this spelling variation.
You can view those headstones at the link below:

All the best,
Jane.
Bob:
I noted that you mentioned that you had found a Dinan living in Moymore, Tulla. That is the parish that I am a Parish Liaison for.
I have found a Patrick Dinan family (several) but not with Anne Meyers as a wife. If you would like more information, please let me know.
You can contact me at: tulla@irelandxo.com.
All the best,
Jane.

Thanks all for these helpful commennts. "My" Patrick Dinan was b. March 1842 in or near Tomgraney, County Clare, and d. 27 March 1892 in Chicago, Illinois. At some point he moved from Detroit to Chicago, where he unwittingly became involved in the famous Cronin murder case, at the time described as The Crime of the Century (see O'Brien, Blood Runs Green).

(April 2023) I’m Following this very interesting post from 2018, as I have an interest in DYNAN and DINAN (plus variations) families who are from Co Clare in the years Prior to 1830 particularly.
I’ve been looking at many D*NAN families all from Co Clare, so far the areas listed on the earliest records (Griffiths valuation, Baptisms and Marriages, Grave Inscriptions etc) I can search seem to be around Tulla, Bodyke, Tuamgraney and Scariff, Ballinahinch, O’Callaghans Mills and possibly Ogonnelloe. Also down to around Killaloe.
Plus areas around Ennis, Liscasey, Newmarket on Fergus, Sixmilebridge, and Bunratty.
A number are also in areas around Ennistymon & Ardnacullia, Lahinch and possibly Liscannor.
I’m trying to find them in areas with other surnames such as McNamara( so numerous I know!), O’Neill, Hogan, Greene, Casey, Slattery, Fitzgerald…in no particular order and etc etc.
I’ve tried tracking the Denis Dynan/Dinan (born 1809 died 1883) who lived in Ardnacullia with wife and children, some of whom emigrate to the USA. I would love to find his Parents and Siblings names and details…I suspect so would many other people, as he is involved on many Trees on various genealogy websites.
I’ve tried following the McNamaras who are from the Lahinch and Ennistymon area and were very good or professional Golfers some of whom also also end up in USA.
I’m following this and interested in all options on the above and would be delighted to see any other posts about these families and people who marry into their line etc.
Thank you and best wishes,
Lyn
