I am trying to track down a Patrick Bouni who was god father to my 3rd gr grandmother's brother in Cullenagh, Cork in 1835. I have a note that Bouni is a branch name of Mahoney and this child's mother was Ellen Scimilihane/Mahoney.

Hi Susan,
Bouni is a miss-spelling, go back to Irish Genealogy and input Buee / Buye
Use Cullenagh for the place

thanks, Brendan. I have some "hits". Is Buee/Buye a branch name for Mahoney? My 3gr grandmother was Ellen Mahoney, married Jeremiah Neale/Neil in Cullenagh.

Hi Susan,
West Cork was full of sub septs, my GG grandfather was born as Denis Meenig, he married as Denis McCarthy. The Meenig name died out before 1860. I think in your case the Buee's were a sub sept of Mahoney. Buee is the Irish for yellow, they were the yellow Mahoney's, it may refer to the fact that where they lived was full of yellow gorse.
