  • Hi Marlene

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

It is probably more likely that you will initially learn more about your Irish ancestors from your side given the small amount of info you have. As you say the name is quite common in the 19th century:

Do you think you have exhausted all resources your side including death and obituary records as well as passenger lists etc?

  • My Gr.Grandfather William J. or I. Hart  was born in Lancaster,Pa. 1820 , went to Florida, Columbia County in 1840

fought in the 2nd Seminole Indian war, and the Civil War. He was a farmer. sent 3 requests to Bureau of Vital Statistics

in Jacksonville,Fl. no record found of his death. last found on 1880 Census in Polk County, Fl. His wife Samantha Davis

was buried in 1916 in Orlando ,Fl. no marker , but in their records.I f  I had death certificate it would show his fathers name

who came from Ireland before 1820.  There are a large number of Hart families in Sligo,Cork. and a few other places.

I would appreciate any information thank you, God Bless.   Marlene Hart Blondething@comcast.net

  • Dear Marlene

If you go to rootsireland.ie or familysearch.org (a free site) you will be able to search for Hart ancestors by county. It would be very difficult to pinpoint the correct family as we do not have a first name for the Irish-born ancestor.

  • I have not checked passenger lists because I only have my Gr.Grandfathers name  William I. or J. Hart and do no

know his fathers name. William was born in 1820 so his father could have come over from Ireland any time before

that or possibly only a year or two before 1820. They went to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Then William moved to

Florida, Columbia County and was there in 1840 at age 20 and married to Samantha Davis. There are areas in

Ireland where there were many people name "Hart" ie. Sligo.thanks for any info . can immigration and passenger

lists be checked from there?  thank you  Marlene and Don Hart.

  • are there any immigration or migration  lists from Ireland around 1820 or earlier that might show  "hart" going

to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. since William was born in Pennsylvania in 1820 , and I have not found any record

of his name here. thank you.  Marlene Hart

  • Hi Marlene

Passenger lists can be a bit hit and miss depending on your luck. Unfortunately it was often the case that there was less interest in who was leaving the country than who was entering the new one.

Some lists from 1820 on are kept in the National Archives in Washington and some can be accessed on Castle Garden for those who passed into New York so that would be a good place to start
