I have for some years been trying to find out when and where Callaghan McCarthy was born, and who his parents were. The problem I have is that there are about 16 possible people with that name in the right timeline, but none of them were born in Bandon. They are mostly born in Cork, or other places in County Cork. (I am guessing that he was born between 1803 - 1814. But there is also a baptism for a Callaghan in 1815).
Callaghan and Ellen Brien were my Great Great Grandparents. They were married on 1st October 1832 in Bandon. Their religion was Roman Catholic. They had four children; Jeremiah, born 1833, Daniel, b 1838 (my
Great Grandfather), Callaghan, b 1841 and another Jeremiah b 1843. I do not know which townland they lived in. I have checked Grifith's Valuations and the Tithe Applotments, and there are about 30 townlands listed for Callaghan McCarthy.
Daniel came to Manchester some time around 1850. I'm fairly sure he is the Daniel McCarthy I have found on the 1851 census as he is the right age and he gives Bandon as his place of birth. He is working in a cotton mill.
I have a copy of his marriage certificate to Catherine Barry in 1863 in Manchester. She also gives Bandon as her place of birth.
However, Callaghan remains a mystery. I can make a guess at who Ellen's parents were, but can anyone please enlighten me about Callaghan McCarthy?
I have used Irishgenealogyi.e and Findmypast for my researches.
I hope somebody can point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance.

Olga:
A few comments.
Marriages were usually held in the bride's parish and Callaghan McCarthy may have been from another nearby parish.
Many RC parishes do not have records back to 1803-1814 including most of the parishes bordering Bandon.
I looked for a Callaghan McCarthy baptismal record with father Jeremiah (trying to use the normal naming pattern) but did not find a good lead.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your assistance Roger. I also found the Jeremiah birth, plus I checked all the Callaghan's who had Callaghan and Daniel as a father.
I'll keep searching. I'm confident that I will find him eventually.

Hi, I have a question regarding the (lack of) family information in the parish registers for Bandon. The names of the parents of the bride & groom are not given, nor is their address or place of residence.
Is this usual? I have searched for another branch of my family in Kilkenny and both parents' names are given, as is the place of residence of the bride. That information was very helpful in going back another generation.
My question is, if I sent off for a copy of the marriage certificate for Callaghan McCarthy and Ellen Brien, would it give more information than is written in the register? Or is that it?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Olga:
If you contact the church in Bandon, they would not be able to provide any more information then what is on the register.
Almost all RC parish registers do not show the names of the parents for marriage records. If you found a Kilkenny record with parents names you were fortunate. Starting in 1864 marriages were supposed to be civilly registered and when registered the father's names only were recorded
Place names were shown on a number of marriage records. I can't give you a percentage.
The registers and what was recorded was up to the local parish priest.

Hi, I think I might have found Callaghan McCarthy and family, but I have hit a problem.
I found him on Griffith's Valuations, but I cannot access the details of the occupants of the townland.
This is what I found; County, Cork; Parish, Kilnagross; Townland, Lackanalooha.
Callaghan plus several other McCarthys, including Ellen McCarthy (his wife?) and a Michael (his father?), are living at Lackanalooha, but when I click on Callaghan's "details" no information about the
occupants living with him come up. How can I find out about the rest of the household?
Can somebody please assist me, or tell me what I am doing wrong?
I look forward to your reply.
Kind regards
Olga

Olga:
The Griffiths Valuation was a tax survey. Only the head of household was shown and there is no available info on others living in the household. The Ellen listed was likely a widow of another McCarthy and not the wife of Callaghan.
